Six short conversations for asking where things are. Each uses natural, everyday Japanese — the kind real people use, not anime heroes.
① Convenience Store — コンビニ
A:
すみません、コンビニはどこですか？
Sumimasen, konbini wa doko desu ka?
Excuse me, where is the convenience store?
B:
あそこですよ。
Asoko desu yo.
It's just over there.
A:
ありがとうございます！
Arigatou gozaimasu!
Thank you very much!
② Smoking Area — きつえんじょ
A:
すみません、きつえんじょはどこですか？
Sumimasen, kitsuenjo wa doko desu ka?
Excuse me, where is the smoking area?
B:
すみません、わかりません。
Sumimasen, wakarimasen.
I'm sorry, I don't know.
A:
そうですか。ありがとうございます。
Sou desu ka. Arigatou gozaimasu.
I see. Thank you anyway.
③ ATM — エーティーエム
A:
すみません、ATMはありますか？
Sumimasen, ATM wa arimasu ka?
Excuse me, is there an ATM?
B:
はい、あそこにあります。
Hai, asoko ni arimasu.
Yes, there is one over there.
A:
ありがとうございます！
Arigatou gozaimasu!
Thank you very much!
④ Toilet — トイレ
A:
すみません、トイレはどこですか？
Sumimasen, toire wa doko desu ka?
Excuse me, where is the toilet?
B:
あちらです。まっすぐいってください。
Achira desu. Massugu itte kudasai.
It's that way. Please go straight ahead.
A:
わかりました、ありがとう！
Wakarimashita, arigatou!
Got it, thank you!
⑤ Vending Machine — じどうはんばいき
A:
すみません、じどうはんばいきはどこですか？
Sumimasen, jidouhanbaiki wa doko desu ka?
Excuse me, where is the vending machine?
B:
にかいにあります。
Nikai ni arimasu.
It's on the second floor.
A:
どうもありがとうございます！
Doumo arigatou gozaimasu!
Thank you very much!
⑥ Coin Locker — コインロッカー
A:
すみません、コインロッカーはありますか？
Sumimasen, koin rokkaa wa arimasu ka?
Excuse me, are there coin lockers?
B:
はい、えきのなかにあります。
Hai, eki no naka ni arimasu.
Yes, they are inside the station.
A:
ありがとうございます！
Arigatou gozaimasu!

Real Japanese Tip: Notice that dialogs ③ and ⑥ use 「～はありますか？」(wa arimasu ka) — "Is there a...?" — while the others use 「～はどこですか？」(wa doko desu ka) — "Where is...?" In real life, Japanese people often prefer arimasu ka when they're not sure if the thing exists nearby. Both are natural and you'll hear them constantly in Japan!
