Where Are You From?
This lesson covers asking and answering where someone is from and where they live — one of the first things you say when meeting someone new. Along the way you'll learn Hungarian's suffix system, which replaces prepositions like "in" and "from" with endings attached directly to the place name.
Formal vs Informal Hungarian
Hungarian has two registers. Use informal (tegezés) with friends and people your own age. Use formal (magázás) with strangers, older people, and in professional situations.

💡 Tip: ön takes 3rd-person verb forms
In formal Hungarian, ön (formal "you") uses the same verb ending as "he/she". So ön lakik (you live — formal) has the same ending as ő lakik (he/she lives).
The Two Key Question Words
These two question words determine which suffix the place name takes:

The Suffix Rules
Hungarian uses suffixes (endings) instead of separate prepositions like "in" or "from". There are two pairs to learn:
-ból / -ből

Most learners find it easiest to simply memorise: Magyarországról vagyok (I'm from Hungary) and Magyarországon lakom (I live in Hungary). Everything else follows the regular -ból/-ből and -ban/-ben pattern.

Nationalities
Nationality words in Hungarian are adjectives. When used after vagyok (I am), they require no changes for gender — Hungarian has no grammatical gender.
