The -ul / -ül Suffix — The Key Rule
In English we say "I speak English" — the language is a noun. In Hungarian, language names used with verbs like speak, learn, and understand take the -ul/-ül suffix, turning them into adverbs meaning "in that language".
-ul / -ül
Think of it as: angolul = "English-ly" = "in English"
Angolul beszélek. → I speak English.
Magyarul tanulok. → I am learning Hungarian.
Magyarul tanulok. → I am learning Hungarian.
Vowel harmony
Like all Hungarian suffixes, -ul/-ül follows vowel harmony:
-ul → back vowels
Words containing: a, á, o, ó, u, ú
angolul, spanyolul, arabul, hollandul, oroszul, portugálul
-ül → front vowels
Words containing: e, é, i, í, ö, ő, ü, ű
németül, törökül, svédül, görögül, lengyelül, csehül
Special cases
A handful of language names end in a vowel that lengthens before the suffix: franciául, kínaiul, koreaiul. The vowel before the suffix is lengthened. Learn these as vocabulary items.

Three Essential Verbs
1. Beszél — to speak
Regular back-vowel verb. Use with -ul/-ül + the language adverb.

2. Tanul — to learn / to study
Back-vowel verb. Use with -ul/-ül to say what language you are learning.

3. Ért — to understand
Front-vowel verb. Very useful for saying you understand a language but don't speak it.

20 Countries — Vocabulary Table

Note: Brazil and Portugal
Both countries speak portugál — the same language name, the same adverb (portugálul). This is the only duplicate in the 20-country list.

Grammar: How Long You've Been Learning
To say how long you've been doing something, Hungarian uses time word + suffix in the present tense (there is no separate present perfect tense in Hungarian):
