Days and Time

Klingon Basic Conversation 1

Chapter 7 · Days, Dates & Telling the Time

⏰ Days, Dates & Telling the Time — jaj, rep

A Klingon who says "tomorrow" means it. By the end of this chapter you will be able to talk about yesterday, today and tomorrow, say whether something happens by day or by night, ask the hour and tell it, and fix a time to meet, or to fight. The chapter has three parts: days, the hour, and appointments. Klingon has no tense, so a time word at the start of the sentence does the work, as in Klingon Grammar 1, Chapter 10.

No Days of the Week Here There are published names for the days of the week, but I could not confirm them, and the Klingon calendar does not run on a Terran week. This course uses the words above, which are enough to arrange anything in Klingon.

Part 2 — The Hour

The words are rep "hour", tup "minute", lup "second". According to Marc Okrand, Klingons use the Federation 24-hour clock for dealings with other worlds, and the hour is numbered, not counted: tera' rep cha'maH "Earth hour 20", meaning 8 p.m. To ask the time you give an order: rep yIper! "Label the hour!".

① What Time Is It? — rep yIper!

A: rep yIper! What time is it? (Literally: label the hour!)
B: tera' rep cha'maH. It is hour 20, 8 p.m.
A: majQa'. Well done.

② Tomorrow We Fight — wa'leS maSuv

A: wa'leS maSuv. Tomorrow we fight.
B: nuqDaq? Where?
A: naDev. Here.
B: tera' rep 'ar? At what hour?
A: tera' rep wa'maH. At hour 10.

③ Yesterday and Today — wa'Hu', DaHjaj

A: wa'Hu' nuqDaq SoH? Where were you yesterday?
B: wa'Hu' Qo'noSDaq jIH. DaHjaj DujDaq jIH. Yesterday I was on Kronos. Today I am on the ship.
A: Qapla'. Success.

④ Tomorrow — wa'leS jIjaH

A: wa'leS nuqDaq bIjaH? Where will you go tomorrow?
B: wa'leS Qo'noSDaq jIjaH. Tomorrow I will go to Kronos.
A: Qapla'! Success!

⑤ Day and Night — pem, ram

A: pem jIleng. ram jIQong. By day I travel. By night I sleep.
B: SuvwI' SoH'a'? Are you a warrior?
A: HIja'. ram maSuv. Yes. We fight by night.

⑥ The Challenge — DaHjaj

A: DaHjaj tera' rep jav maSuv. Today at hour 6 we fight.
B: DaHjaj? QaQ! Today? Good!
A: Qapla'! Success!

Build It — Day Words wa' "one" + Hu' (ago) = wa'Hu' "yesterday". wa' + leS (from now) = wa'leS "tomorrow". Any number works: cha'Hu' "two days ago", wejleS "three days from now" (Klingon Grammar 1, Chapter 10).

Culture — A Time Is a Promise To give a time to a Klingon is to make a promise, so the hour is kept. Turning up late for a fight is a disgrace, and turning up on the wrong day is worse. That is why the day words come first in the sentence: they set the terms before anything else is said.
