Your Work

Klingon Basic Conversation 1

Chapter 6 · Your Work

⚔️ Your Work — Qu'

Klingons are not good at small talk about careers, but they are very good at saying what they do and what rank they hold. By the end of this chapter you will be able to say your role (warrior, officer, commander, teacher), ask someone else's, and say that a duty is done. The key tool is the doer suffix -wI' from Klingon Grammar 1, Chapter 7: Suv "fight" becomes SuvwI' "one who fights, a warrior". This chapter uses only roles whose words I could check. Words for engineer, healer and clerk are left out rather than guessed; you will meet them in Klingon Basic Conversation 2.

① What Are You? — nuq SoH?

A: 'Iv HoDlI'? Who is your captain?
B: HoDwI' 'oH Martaq'e'. My captain is Martok.

④ Teacher or Learner? — HaDwI', ghojwI'

A: HaDwI' SoH'a'? Are you a teacher? (Literally: a one who studies.)
B: ghobe'. ghojwI' jIH. tlhIngan Hol vIghoj. No. I am a learner. I am learning Klingon.
A: majQa'! Well done!

⑤ The Task Is Done — Qu' vIta'pu'

A: Qu' Data'pu''a'? Have you done the task?

⑥ On the Ship — DujDaq

A: nuqDaq SoH? Where are you?

A: Duj 'ar ghaj HoDlI'? How many ships does your captain have?

Build It — The Doer Suffix -wI' Suv "fight" + -wI' = SuvwI' "one who fights, warrior". ra' "command" + -wI' = ra'wI' "commander". HaD "study" + -wI' = HaDwI' "teacher/student of a subject". ghoj "learn" + -wI' = ghojwI' "learner". The plural is -pu': SuvwI'pu' "warriors". Note that this -wI' is the same letters as the possessive "my" in Chapter 5: the doer suffix goes on a verb, the possessive on a noun.

Culture — Rank Is Earned, Not Given In Klingon society rank is won in service. A warrior is SuvwI' first and anything else second. Saying SuvwI' jIH is the most respected answer you can give to nuq SoH?, whatever your actual post.
