Klingon Basic Conversation 1

Chapter 8 ยท Food & Drink at the Feast Hall

๐Ÿท Food & Drink at the Feast Hall โ€” Soj

A cafรฉ in the human sense does not exist here: Klingons feast. By the end of this chapter you will be able to say what you want to eat and drink, ask what someone wants, praise a dish, and shout the commands "Eat!" and "Drink!". The chapter adapts the usual cafรฉ situation to the feast hall, as agreed in the course outline. The grammar is the same: object, then verb, with the prefixes you know.

โ‘  Ordering โ€” HIq vIneH

B: 'Iw HIq vIneH. I want bloodwine.
A: majQa'! Well done!

โ‘ก Do You Eat Gagh? โ€” gagh DaSop'a'?

A: gagh DaSop'a'? Do you eat gagh?
B: HIja', gagh vISop. Yes, I eat gagh.
A: Qapla'! Success!

โ‘ข Water? โ€” bIQ?

A: bIQ DaneH'a'? Do you want water?

A: majQa'. Well done.

โ‘ฃ Praising the Food โ€” Soj QaQ

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Key Phrases โ€” Gravaj Hol

Klingon has no formal and informal "you", and no "please", so the table gives only the blunt forms.

No "Please" โ€” Use a Command A command uses the prefix yI- (one person) or tI- (several): yISop!, tItlhutlh!. In Klingon this is not rude, because there is no softer way to say it. The one way to add respect is the honorific -neS (Klingon Grammar 1, Chapter 7).

Culture โ€” Gagh, Served Live gagh is the classic Klingon dish, served live because freshness is the point. The polite thing to say about it is Soj QaQ "the food is good", ideally with your mouth full. Water (bIQ) is for ships' coolant and nervous diplomats: a Klingon asks for 'Iw HIq.
The Word for "Feast Hall" The Klingon words for a hall or a table are not ones I could confirm, so this chapter does not use one. You can say where you are with the place words from Chapter 4 (naDev "here") and the food with the words above.
