Family and House

Klingon Basic Conversation 1

Chapter 5 ยท Family & House

๐Ÿฐ Family & House โ€” mogh

For a Klingon, family is not a private matter: it is the root of honour. By the end of this chapter you will be able to name your relatives, say "my father" and "your mother", ask how many children someone has, and talk about your house. The grammar is the possessive you learned in Klingon Grammar 1, Chapter 3: people who use language take -wI' "my" and -lI' "your", while things take -wIj and -lIj.

โ‘  Who Is Your Father? โ€” 'Iv vavlI'?

A: 'Iv vavlI'? Who is your father?
B: vavwI' 'oH Mogh'e'. My father is Mogh.
A: Qapla'! Success!

โ‘ก Brothers and Sisters โ€” loDnI'wI'

A: loDnI' Daghaj'a'? Do you have a brother?
B: HIja'. cha' loDnI' vIghaj. be'nI' vIghajbe'. Yes. I have two brothers. I have no sister.
A: cha' loDnI'! majQa'. Two brothers! Well done.

โ‘ข Children โ€” puq 'ar Daghaj?

A: puq 'ar Daghaj? How many children do you have?
B: wej puq vIghaj. cha' puqloD, wa' puqbe'. I have three children. Two sons, one daughter.
A: majQa'. Well done.

โ‘ฃ Your House โ€” nuq tuqlIj?

A: nuq tuqlIj? What is your house?
B: tuqwIj 'oH Martaq tuq'e'. My house is the House of Martok.
A: Qapla'. Success.

My and Your โ€” People vs Things People who use language take -wI' "my" and -lI' "your": vavwI' "my father", SoSlI' "your mother". Everything else takes -wIj and -lIj: tuqwIj "my house". For "his, her" the suffix is -Daj and for "their" it is -chaj: vavDaj "his father".

Build It โ€” Child, Son, Daughter puq "child" + loD "man" = puqloD "son" (a male child). puq + be' "woman" = puqbe' "daughter". Likewise loD + nal (a spouse suffix) = loDnal "husband" and be' + nal = be'nal "wife".

Culture โ€” The House Is Your Honour A Klingon's tuq (house) is more than a surname. Its standing is the standing of everyone in it, and an act of dishonour by one member stains all. That is why Klingons introduce relatives by house, and why a warrior speaks of vavwI' (my father) with the pride of someone who is still being measured against him.
