Chapter 8 · Technology & Media: Phones, Internet & the News

📱 Technology & Media — Technológia és média

Phones, computers and the news are everywhere in daily life, and so are the problems that go with them: a flat battery, a forgotten password, no signal. This chapter gives you the language for tech troubles and for talking about what you read in the news, built around the ending -ról / -ről ("about, from"). Dialogs have no respelling line; the Hard words notes cover the difficult words.

① Wi-Fi at the Café — A Wi-Fi a kávézóban

A: Elnézést, mi a Wi-Fi jelszó? Excuse me, what is the Wi-Fi password?
B: A számlán van, a lap alján. It's on the bill, at the bottom of the page.
A: Köszönöm. Nem tudok csatlakozni, nem működik. Thank you. I can't connect, it isn't working.
B: Próbálja meg újra, a kis- és nagybetűk számítanak. Try again, small and capital letters matter.
A: Most már megy. Jó az internet? Now it works. Is the internet good?
B: Igen, elég gyors. Yes, it's quite fast.
Hard words: jelszó YEHL-soh · csatlakozni CHAW-tlaw-kozz-nih · működik MUE-keu-dik · nagybetűk NAWDY-beh-tuek · számítanak SAH-mee-taw-nawk

② A Flat Battery — Lemerült a telefonom

A: Lemerült a telefonom. Van töltőd? My phone has run out of battery. Do you have a charger?
B: Sajnos itthon hagytam, de a pultnál lehet kérni. Unfortunately I left it at home, but you can ask at the counter.
A: Az enyém más típus, nem biztos, hogy jó lesz. Mine is a different type, it may not fit.
B: Akkor kapcsold ki a telefont, és vedd ki a kártyát. Then switch the phone off and take the card out.
A: Nincs térerő sem, mindjárt hívlak. There's no signal either, I'll call you in a moment.
Hard words: lemerült LEH-meh-ruelt · töltő TEUL-teuu · típus TEE-push · térerő TAY-reh-reuu · mindjárt MIND-yahrt

③ A Login Problem (Philip's) — Bejelentkezés

A: Nem tudok bejelentkezni a gépre. I can't log in to the computer.
B: Elfelejtetted a jelszavad? Have you forgotten your password?
A: Nem, de azt írja, hogy hibás a felhasználónév. No, but it says the username is wrong.
B: Újra kell indítanod a gépet, aztán próbáld meg még egyszer. You have to restart the computer, then try once more.
A: Megvan, most már be tudok lépni. Köszönöm! Got it, I can log in now. Thank you!
B: Szívesen. Írj egy e-mailt, ha újra gond van. You're welcome. Send an email if there is a problem again.

B: Igen, az interneten olvastam. Egy érdekes cikk volt a közlekedésről. Yes, I read it on the internet. There was an interesting article about transport.
A: Miről szólt a cikk? What was the article about?
B: Az új villamosokról, amelyek jövőre indulnak. About the new trams that start next year.
A: Szerintem ez jó hír. Beszéltem erről a barátaimmal. I think that's good news. I talked about this with my friends.
B: Én is. A rádióban is hallottam róla. Me too. I heard about it on the radio as well.

A: Igen, de lehet, hogy nagy a fájl. Yes, but the file may be big.
B: Oszd meg velem a felhőn keresztül. Share it with me through the cloud.

💬 About: -ról / -ről — A beszéd tárgya

The ending -ról / -ről means "about" (what you read, talk or think about) and also "from" (coming off something). It belongs to the same "on" series as -on/-ra/-ról that you met with places, so the vowel follows harmony: hírekről (front: -ről), filmről (front: -ről), autóról (back: -ról). With pronouns use rólam, rólad, róla, rólunk, rólatok, róluk.

Olvasni valamiről, Beszélni valamiről Many Hungarian verbs take -ról/-ről where English uses "about": beszélni valamiről ("to talk about something"), olvasni valamiről, hallani valamiről ("to hear about"), szólni valamiről ("to be about"). And to say you saw it in the news, use -ban/-ben: a hírekben.

Foreign Words and Endings English words are used a lot in technology, and the endings are attached with a hyphen: Wi-Fi-re ("onto the Wi-Fi"), e-mailt (object), az appban. Where the pronunciation differs from the spelling, the ending follows the sound: the last sound of e-mail is -l, so it is e-mailt, e-mailben. For a hyphenated word, check the way Hungarians say it before choosing a/e endings.

📰 Olvasás — Reading

Read the text slowly, then check the word list underneath.

Kovács Péter minden reggel a telefonján olvassa a híreket. Először megnézi a főcímeket: ma az új villamosokról, a hideg időről és egy futballmeccsről szólnak. Egy cikket elolvas, a többit megosztja a barátaival.

Ma azonban nem működött az internet. Péter bekapcsolta a Wi-Fi-t, de a hálózat nem látszott. Végül újraindította a routert, és öt perc múlva újra volt kapcsolat. Azóta mindig kikapcsolja a routert éjszakára.

Real Hungarian Tip — -ról/-ről and -ból/-ből: Two Different "From"s Hungarian has two pairs for "from". -ból/-ből (the "in" series) means coming out of something: a házból, Budapestből. -ról/-ről (the "on" series) means coming off something, or about it: a hírekről, a netről. Which one a place takes is vocabulary (Magyarországról, Skóciából).
Wi-Fi, WiFi, Wifi? Hungarians write Wi-Fi (and say it as written, roughly "vi-fi"). The w in Hungarian words is rare and is pronounced like v. If you ask for the password in a café, Mi a Wi-Fi jelszó? is understood everywhere, and in tourist places What is the Wi-Fi password? usually works too.
Politely Asking for Help with Technology In customer-support talk, use the polite forms from Chapter 6: Be tudna jelentkezni? ("Could you log in?"), Újra tudná indítani? ("Could you restart it?"). With a friend, the informal imperative is enough: Indítsd újra!, Kapcsold be!
