🌠 Wishes, Hopes & What You Would Do — Kívánságok és remények

What would you do if you won the lottery? Where would you go if you had the time? This chapter is about dreams, wishes and hopes, and the grammar for them: the conditional, which also explains szeretnék, tudna and every other polite phrase you have used so far. You will also learn Ha …, Bárcsak … and volna. Dialogs have no respelling line; the Hard words notes cover the difficult words.

🌈 The Conditional — A feltételes mód

The conditional says what would happen. In Chapter 1 you met the polite szeretnék, kérnék, tudna: all are this one form. To build it, take the infinitive without -ni and add -nék, -nál, -na, -nánk, -nátok, -nának (back vowels), or -nék, -nél, -ne, -nénk, -nétek, -nének (front vowels). Vowel harmony decides, as always, and the I form is always -nék.

🎯 The Definite Conditional — Határozott ragozás

When the object is definite (a könyvet, őt, azt) the endings change: -nám/-ném for I, -nád/-néd for you, -ná/-né for he, she and -nák/-nék for they. The we and you (pl.) forms stay the same: Olvasnám a könyvet ("I would read the book") against Olvasnék egy könyvet ("I would read a book").

🔙 Irregular Stems — Rendhagyó igék

Verbs whose stem ends in a vowel-like sound or that are irregular double the n: lenni → lennék, menni → mennék, venni → vennék. After a long vowel the same thing happens: enni → ennék. Learn the I form and the rest follow the pattern above.

🔮 Real, Imaginary and Past Conditions — Ha …

After ha ("if"), Hungarian uses the conditional in both parts of an imaginary sentence: Ha lenne időm, utaznék ("If I had time, I would travel"), unlike English, which uses "had" in the first part. A likely condition uses the future or present: Ha jó idő lesz, kirándulunk. For something in the past that can no longer change, use the past tense + volna: Ha tanultam volna, átmentem volna ("If I had studied, I would have passed").

KindHungarianEnglish
Real (likely) conditionHa jó idő lesz, kirándulunk. If the weather is good, we'll hike.
Imaginary conditionHa jó idő lenne, kirándulnánk.If the weather were good, we would hike.
Imaginary: wishBárcsak itt lennél!If only you were here!
Past (too late)Ha tanultam volna, átmentem volna. If I had studied, I would have passed.
Past wishBárcsak többet tanultam volna. If only I had studied more.

Kovács Éva sokat álmodozik. Ha több pénze lenne, megvenné a régi nagymamája házát, és szép kertet csinálna mellé. Szívesen utazna Japánba is, és egy hónapig ott maradna. Ha nyerne a lottón, abbahagyná a munkát, de tanulna tovább.

A férje, Tamás, kevésbé álmodozik. Ő inkább azt mondja: „Remélem, jövőre sikerül kicserélni a tetőt, és ha még marad pénzünk, elutazunk.” Éva szerint ez is jó terv, de azért néha elmenne a lottószelvényért.

Real Hungarian Tip — The Conditional Is Also Politeness Everything you learned about polite requests is this same conditional: Szeretnék egy kávét ("I would like a coffee"), Tudna segíteni? ("Could you help?"), Kérhetnék egy pohár vizet? ("Could I have a glass of water?"). The more of these you say, the more natural the conditional will feel in the rest of the chapter: Szeretnék, Szeretnél, Szeretne …
Both Halves Take the Conditional In English the if part is in the past ("If I had …") and the result part uses "would". In Hungarian both parts are in the conditional: Ha lenne időm, utaznék. The ha clause often has the verb lenni: Ha gazdag lennék, … ("If I were rich, …"). Say it as a pair of mirrored endings and it will stick.
Bárcsak and Volna — Wishes and Regrets Bárcsak ("if only") starts a wish, and the verb that follows is in the conditional: Bárcsak itt lennél! For a wish about the past, use the past tense with volna: Bárcsak elmentem volna! ("If only I had gone!"). Volna does not change for person: the verb before it carries the ending.
