⏪ The Past Tense — A múlt idő

The past tense is simple: take the verb stem and add -t- plus a person ending. Vowel harmony decides back (-tam) or front (-tem). In the 3rd person singular many verbs add a linking vowel: dolgozott, olvasott. Remember the definite conjugation too: olvastam egy könyvet (indefinite) and olvastam a könyvet (definite) look the same for "I", but olvastál / olvastad and olvasott / olvasta differ.

Irregular Past Stems — Rendhagyó igék A few common verbs change their stem in the past: enni → ettem, inni → ittam, tenni → tettem, vinni → vittem. In the 3rd person, enni and inni use the old stem: evett, ivott. Treat these as vocabulary, and learn each one with its past form.

🔙 The Past of "to be" — A lenni múlt ideje

The past of lenni is regular and super useful: voltam, voltál, volt, voltunk, voltatok, voltak. Unlike the present, the 3rd person is volt (not omitted): Jó volt ("It was good").

Negatives and Questions Put nem before the verb: Nem dolgoztam ("I didn't work"). Questions need no change in word order: Dolgoztál tegnap? ("Did you work yesterday?"). For "have you ever", use the past plus már ("already"): Voltál már Budapesten? And "not yet" is még nem: Még nem voltam ott.

Real Hungarian Tip — One Past Tense, No Extras Unlike English, Hungarian has just one simple past tense: dolgoztam means "I worked", "I was working" and "I have worked". There is no separate perfect or imperfect. Context and time words (tegnap, már) do the rest of the job.
Which Ending? Check the Vowels Look at the vowels of the verb. Back vowels (dolgozik, olvas, marad) take -tam / -tál / -tak; front vowels (ment, pihen, ül) take -tem / -tél / -tek. Verbs ending in -s, -sz, -z and some others add a linking -ott / -ett / -ött in the 3rd person: olvas → olvasott.
Don't Forget the Definite Ending When the object is definite, the past endings change for te, ő, mi, ti and ők: láttál egy filmet but láttad a filmet. For én the two forms are identical (láttam), which makes it a gentle place to start.
