Set Phrases You Can Learn Whole Phrases such as Tudna lassabban beszélni? ("Could you speak more slowly?") and Megismételné? ("Could you repeat it?") use a polite conditional form. You do not need the grammar yet (that comes in Hungarian Basic Conversation 3): learn them as whole phrases and they will already make you sound polite.

🔤 Spelling a Name — Betűzés

Spelling a name is common on the phone. Hungarian letter names are short, and they match the sounds from the alphabet course. Ask Hogy írják a nevét? ("How is your name written?"), or say Betűzze, kérem ("Please spell it").

Real Hungarian Tip — Phone Numbers Hungarians often read a phone number in pairs or in short groups, for example húsz, harminc, egy, kettő for 20 30 1 2. Mobile numbers begin with a code such as 06 20, 06 30 or 06 70; from abroad you use +36. If you are not sure, ask Megismételné? and write it down.
Szia on the Phone Szia works as both "hello" and "goodbye" with friends, and Viszlát ("see you") is the usual goodbye with strangers. In a formal call end with Viszonthallásra! ("Until we hear each other again!"), the telephone version of "goodbye".
Don't Panic If You Don't Understand Hungarians speak fast on the phone. It is always acceptable to say Nem értem and ask them to repeat. A short text message (SMS) or an email is often easier to deal with if you want to make an appointment.
