💭 In My Opinion — Szerintem

Szerint means "according to", and it takes personal endings like a noun: szerintem ("in my opinion"), szerinted, szerinte. It can also follow a name: Anna szerint ("according to Anna").

👍 Liking Things — Tetszik

Tetszik is the Hungarian way of saying "to like" something you see, hear or find pleasant. It works differently from szeretni: the thing liked is the subject (so the verb agrees with it) and the person who likes it is in the dative, the nekem / neked from Chapter 8: Nekem tetszik a film is literally "to me pleases the film". With a plural thing use tetszenek.

Who likes itHungarianSay it
I like the film.Nekem tetszik a film.NEH-kehm TEHT-sik aw FILM
You like the film.Neked tetszik a film.NEH-kehd TEHT-sik aw FILM
Anna likes the film.Annának tetszik a film.AWN-naw-nawk TEHT-sik aw FILM
I like the pictures (plural).Nekem tetszenek a képek.NEH-kehm TEHT-seh-nehk aw KAY-pehk
I liked it (past).Nekem tetszett.NEH-kehm TEHT-sett
Szeretni or Tetszik? Szeretem is deeper and more general: you szeretem a person, a food, a hobby. Tetszik is a reaction to something in front of you: a film, a dress, a house. Telling someone Szeretlek is a declaration of love, but Tetszel nekem is milder, "I like you".

⚖️ Comparing and Choosing — Jobban, inkább, mert

To say you prefer something, put jobban ("better") before szeretem and compare with mint: A teát jobban szeretem, mint a kávét. For "I'd rather" use inkább: Inkább teát kérek. To give a reason answer Miért? with mert ("because"), or the fuller azért, mert.

🔤 Three More Verbs — Igék

Indefinite / definite pairs: Azt gondolom, hogy igazad van ("I think you're right"; azt triggers the definite), and Választok egy könyvet ("I'm choosing a book") against Választom a könyvet ("I'm choosing the book").

Real Hungarian Tip — Szerintem Softens an Opinion Hungarians often start with Szerintem or Úgy gondolom, hogy to make an opinion sound polite. Compare Ez rossz ("This is bad") with the gentler Szerintem ez nem jó ("I don't think this is good"). Agree with Szerintem is ("I think so too") or Nekem is ("me too").
Nem értek egyet — Two Words Egyetértek is written as one word, but the negative splits: Nem értek egyet. Do not confuse it with Nem értem ("I don't understand"): értek and értem differ in just one letter, and in meaning completely.
Szép Is, Olcsó Is Is ("also; too") can be doubled for "both … and …": A város szép is, olcsó is ("The city is both beautiful and cheap"). It sits right after the word it stresses, and it is useful for balancing an opinion: Nehéz is, szép is.
