📣 The Formal Imperative — Felszólító mód

In an emergency you give short commands. The polite (Ön) command ends in -jon / -jen / -sen: Hívjon!, Segítsen!, Menjen!. The informal (te) command is shorter: Hívj!, Segíts!, Menj!. To say "don't" put ne before the verb: Ne menjen!

Learn the Commands as Whole Words The imperative has many irregular forms, so for now learn the useful ones as vocabulary rather than building them from rules. If the object is definite, the command changes too: Hívjon mentőt! ("Call an ambulance!") but Hívja a rendőrséget! ("Call the police!"), the definite conjugation again.

🚑 Emergency Services — Segélyszolgálatok

The European emergency number, 112 (száztizenkettő), works in Hungary and connects you to the police, the ambulance or the fire brigade. Operators often speak English, but short Hungarian words help: Baleset történt, Tűz van ("There's a fire") and Orvos kell ("A doctor is needed").

Real Hungarian Tip — Elveszett or Elvesztettem? Use elveszett ("got lost") when the thing is the subject: Elveszett a táskám. Use elvesztettem ("I lost") when you did it: Elvesztettem a telefonomat. Both are past tense, but the second needs the accusative -t on the thing lost (telefonomat).
Where to Get Help Start with the person nearest to you: a hotel receptionist, a ticket clerk or a shop assistant often knows what to do. For serious problems call 112; for lost documents your embassy (nagykövetség) can help, and the police will give you a report (jegyzőkönyv) for your insurance.
Say It Slowly and Clearly In a stressful moment, short words work best: Segítség!, Baleset!, Orvos!, Rendőr!. And remember Tudna lassabban beszélni? from Chapter 10: people usually respond kindly when they see a foreigner trying in Hungarian.
