🛍️ Shopping & Prices — Einkaufen und Preise
Ask how much something costs, say what you're looking for, ask for a different size or colour, try things on, buy food at a market, and pay at the till. The shop assistant is always addressed with the formal Sie — so that's the form used throughout.

💶 Prices — Preise
Use the numbers from Chapter 3. Say the euros, then the word Euro, then the cents — with no word for "and" or "cent" at the end: 12,50 € is zwölf Euro fünfzig.

The Comma Is a Decimal Point
Germans write a comma where English uses a decimal point: 12,50 €, and the euro sign comes after the number. For thousands they use a full stop or a space: 1.000 € = tausend Euro. When a price is a round number of euros, you can just say the number and Euro: zehn Euro.

Three verbs — drei Verben
Nehmen ("to take") is irregular in the du and er forms: du nimmst, er nimmt.

👕 Things to Buy — Kleidung und Lebensmittel
"A" changes with the gender of the word, as in Chapters 5 and 8: einen for der-words, eine for die-words, ein for das-words. So: ich suche einen Pullover, ich suche eine Hose, ich suche ein Hemd.

Real German Tip — Bags, Deposit Bottles & Opening Hours
Bags: plastic bags cost money in most shops, so bring your own — Ich habe eine Tasche is a very normal thing to say. Deposit bottles: many drink bottles and cans carry a deposit called Pfand (about 8–25 cents each). Return the empty bottles to a machine in the supermarket and you'll get a receipt to use at the till. Hours: most shops close in the evening and stay closed on Sundays (as in Chapter 7), so shop for Sunday on Saturday.
Sizes Are Different in Germany
German shops use European sizes. Shoes are numbered around 36–46 (roughly, UK 8 is about EU 42 and UK 9 is about EU 43), and clothes are often given as S / M / L or as a number such as 38, 40, 42. Check a conversion chart before you go; when in doubt, ask Haben Sie das in Größe …? and try things on (anprobieren).
