Get a table, read the menu, order politely, answer the waiter's questions and pay the bill. This is your first "real-world" transaction — and it introduces the most useful polite phrase in the language: ich möchte ("I would like").

Three verbs — drei Verben
Möchten ("would like") is the polite way to ask for something. Essen is irregular: du isst, er isst.

Say "möchte", Not "will"
The German word wollen ("to want") sounds blunt and demanding when ordering — Ich will einen Kaffee comes across like "I want a coffee!" Use ich möchte or ich hätte gern instead, both meaning "I would like". You can also order simply: Einen Kaffee, bitte. All three are perfectly polite.

When you order, "a/an" changes with the gender of the word — exactly the pattern from Chapter 5's ich habe einen Bruder: einen for der-words, eine for die-words, ein for das-words.

Real German Tip — Calling the Waiter, Tap Water & Tipping
Getting attention: say Entschuldigung and catch the waiter's eye. Avoid Herr Ober — it's old-fashioned. Water: water isn't served automatically and usually isn't free; you order it, and it's normally mineral water — with bubbles (mit Kohlensäure) is the default, so say still or ohne Kohlensäure if you want it flat. Tipping: it's polite to round up by about 5–10%. Don't leave coins on the table — when you pay, say the total including the tip and add stimmt so (or "Acht Euro, stimmt so" for a 7.50 bill).
Real German Tip — Kaffee und Kuchen
Kaffee und Kuchen ("coffee and cake") is a well-loved afternoon tradition, usually around 3–4 p.m. — a break with a hot drink and a slice of cake, often at a café or at home with family. If you're invited to it, you're being invited to relax, chat and enjoy — not just to eat.
Card or Cash?
Many small cafés and bakeries in Germany have traditionally been cash-only, and some still are. Before you order a lot, it's polite to ask Kann ich mit Karte bezahlen? ("Can I pay by card?") — and it's useful to keep a little cash on you.
