Asking for Directions

German Basic Conversation 1

Chapter 10 · Asking for Directions

🧭 Asking for Directions — Nach dem Weg fragen

Ask where a place is, ask how to get there, understand "straight on", "left" and "right", and say when you're lost. The person you ask will almost always be a stranger, so this chapter uses the polite Sie form — and the tips will help you understand the reply, which is usually the hardest part.

💬 Six Short Conversations — Gespräche

🏙️ Places — Orte

To say "to the …", zu merges with the article: zu dem becomes zum (for der- and das-words) and zu der becomes zur (for die-words). So Wie komme ich zum Bahnhof? but Wie komme ich zur Post?

Commands With Sie — and "Abbiegen" The polite command for a stranger is the infinitive followed by Sie: Gehen Sie… ("Go…"), Nehmen Sie… ("Take…"). One verb is split in two: abbiegen ("to turn") sends its little word ab to the end — Biegen Sie links ab. You'll hear it a lot, so listen for that final ab. After die, ordinals end in -e: die erste, die zweite, die dritte Straße (numbers from Chapter 7).
Nach dem, neben der — Don't Worry Yet After words like neben ("next to") and gegenüber von ("opposite"), the article changes: der Bahnhof becomes vom Bahnhof (von dem), die Post becomes der Post. This is a grammar idea called the dative case, coming in a later course. For now, just copy the ready-made phrases in the table above.

Three verbs — drei Verben

Wissen ("to know a fact") is irregular in the singular. Use ich weiß es nicht ("I don't know") when someone asks you for directions and you can't help.

Real German Tip — Repeat Back What You Heard Directions can come fast. A very good habit — used in Dialog 2 — is to repeat the key part back: Die zweite Straße links. If you got it wrong, the person will correct you; if you got it right, you've just confirmed it. Then it's perfectly fine to add Noch einmal, bitte or Langsamer, bitte from Chapter 1.
Real German Tip — Red Means Wait Germans take pedestrian lights seriously: bei Rot stehen, bei Grün gehen ("stand at red, go at green"). Even on an empty street, people usually wait for the green man (the Ampelmännchen), partly because children are watching and partly because crossing on red can bring a fine. Following the local habit will help you blend in.
Real German Tip — Street Names & Addresses Street names often end in -straße (street), -platz (square) or -weg (path/way). In an address the number comes after the street name: Hauptstraße 12, and the postcode comes before the town: 10115 Berlin. Knowing this makes reading signs and maps much easier.
