Chapter 7 · Days, Dates & Telling the Time

📅 Days, Dates & Telling the Time — Tage, Daten und Uhrzeit

This chapter has three parts so it stays manageable: Part 1 covers the days of the week and the months; Part 2 builds full dates and birthdays; Part 3 teaches how to ask and tell the time. You can stop after any part and come back to the next one later.

Part 1 · Days & Months — Wochentage und Monate

Days and months are always written with a capital letter. Every day is der (masculine): der Montag.

am, im, um — Three Tiny Words Am goes with days (am Freitag), im with months (im September), and um with clock times (um acht Uhr, "at eight o'clock"). Learn them as ready-made pairs and you won't need the grammar behind them yet.

① What Day Is It? — Welcher Tag ist heute?

A: Welcher Tag ist heute? VEL-kher TAHK ist HOY-tuh What day is it today?
B: Heute ist Freitag. HOY-tuh ist FRY-tahk Today is Friday.
A: Super! Morgen ist Samstag. ZOO-per! MOR-gen ist ZAHMS-tahk Great! Tomorrow is Saturday.
B: Ja, Wochenende! yah, VOKH-en-en-duh Yes, weekend!

Part 2 · Dates & Birthdays — Datum und Geburtstag

To give a date you need "ordinal" numbers: first, second, third… In German, dates are said as der erste Mai ("the first May") and written 1. Mai — with a full stop after the number.

DateGermanSay it
1stder erstedair ERS-tuh
2ndder zweitedair TSVY-tuh
3rdder drittedair DRIT-tuh

29thder neunundzwanzigstedair NOYN-oont-tsvahn-tsikh-stuh
31stder einunddreißigstedair INE-oont-dry-sikh-stuh
How Ordinals Are Built From 1 to 19, add -te to the number: vierte (4th), zehnte (10th). From 20 upwards, add -ste: zwanzigste, dreißigste. Four are irregular: erste (1st), dritte (3rd), siebte (7th), achte (8th) — learn those by heart.
You want to…GermanSay it
Ask today's dateDer Wievielte ist heute?dair VEE-feel-tuh ist HOY-tuh
Ask today's date (another way)Welches Datum ist heute?VEL-khes DAH-toom ist HOY-tuh

Ask about a birthdayWann hast du Geburtstag?vahn hahst doo geh-BOORTS-tahk
Give your birthdayIch habe am dritten Mai Geburtstag.ikh HAH-buh ahm DRIT-ten MY geh-BOORTS-tahk
Say "am dritten" — the -n Sneaks In When you say on a date, the ordinal gets an extra -n: am dritten Mai (on the 3rd of May), am ersten Juni, am zwanzigsten Oktober. Just remember: after am, the ordinal ends in -ten or -sten.
Years & Written Dates A year after 2000 is said as a whole number: 2026 = zweitausendsechsundzwanzig (tsvy-TOW-zent-ZEKS-oont-tsvahn-tsikh). Germans write dates as day.month.year: 29.09.2026. The day always comes first, then the month.

② What's the Date? — Welches Datum?

A: Der Wievielte ist heute? dair VEE-feel-tuh ist HOY-tuh What's the date today?
B: Heute ist der neunundzwanzigste September. HOY-tuh ist dair NOYN-oont-tsvahn-tsikh-stuh zep-TEM-ber Today is the 29th of September.
A: Danke! DAHN-kuh Thanks!

③ Birthdays — Wann hast du Geburtstag?

A: Wann hast du Geburtstag? vahn hahst doo geh-BOORTS-tahk When is your birthday?
B: Ich habe am dritten Mai Geburtstag. Und du? ikh HAH-buh ahm DRIT-ten MY geh-BOORTS-tahk. oont DOO My birthday is on the 3rd of May. And yours?
A: Ich habe am einundzwanzigsten Oktober Geburtstag. ikh HAH-buh ahm INE-oont-tsvahn-tsikh-sten ok-TOH-ber geh-BOORTS-tahk My birthday is on the 21st of October.

Part 3 · Telling the Time — Die Uhrzeit

Ask "What time is it?" and give the time. German has an everyday way and an official 24-hour way — you'll need both.

You want to…GermanSay it
Ask the timeWie spät ist es?vee SHPAYT ist es
Ask the time (another way)Wie viel Uhr ist es?vee FEEL OOR ist es
Give the timeEs ist drei Uhr.es ist dry OOR
Ask "at what time?"Um wie viel Uhr?oom vee FEEL OOR
Say "at 8 o'clock"Um acht Uhr.oom AKHT OOR

Everyday time — die Uhrzeit im Alltag

The examples below all use 3 o'clock, so you can see the pattern.

TimeEveryday GermanSay itLiterally
3:00drei Uhrdry OORthree o'clock
3:05fünf nach dreifünf nahkh DRYfive after three
3:10zehn nach dreitsayn nahkh DRYten after three
3:15Viertel nach dreiFEER-tel nahkh DRYquarter after three
3:30halb vierhahlp FEERhalf (to) four!
3:45Viertel vor vierFEER-tel for FEERquarter before four
3:50zehn vor viertsayn for FEERten before four
The "halb" Trap — Halb Vier Is 3:30! In German, halb vier ("half four") means half an hour towards four — that is, 3:30, not 4:30. The hour you name is always the next one. So 7:30 is halb acht and 10:30 is halb elf. English speakers get caught out by this, so say it out loud a few times until it feels natural.

Official 24-hour time — die offizielle Uhrzeit

Timetables, tickets, opening hours and TV listings use the 24-hour clock: say the hour, then Uhr, then the minutes.

"Morgen" — Tomorrow or Morning? Spelled the same, but different words. Der Morgen (capital M) is the morning — Guten Morgen. Morgen (small m, an adverb) is "tomorrow" — Bis morgen! A useful pair: morgen früh means "tomorrow morning".
Real German Tip — Sundays and Punctuality Sunday is treated as a quiet rest day (Ruhetag): most shops, supermarkets and many businesses are closed, so plan your shopping for Saturday. Germans also value being on time — arriving a few minutes early is normal, and being late without a word is considered rude. If you're running behind, a quick message is polite: Ich bin in zehn Minuten da ("I'll be there in ten minutes").
