Nature & Environment

German Basic Conversation 4

Chapter 9 · Nature & Environment: Climate, Recycling & Sustainable Living

🌍 Nature and Environment — Natur und Umwelt

Sort your rubbish, talk about climate change, discuss transport and energy, shop sustainably, and plan a day in nature. The grammar this time is the language of cause and effect (da, denn, wegen, durch, dadurch, deshalb, sodass, so … dass, zu … um … zu), the building of compound nouns (Mülltrennung, Klimawandel, umweltfreundlich), and words for how likely something is (wahrscheinlich, vermutlich, kaum).

💬 Six Conversations — Gespräche

Read each one aloud, then check the English. Dialog 4 is formal (Sie); the others are between friends (du). Watch for the little linking words that join a cause to its effect.

① Sorting the Rubbish — Wohin kommt das?

A: Wohin kommt diese Joghurtverpackung? Where does this yoghurt pot go?
B: In den gelben Sack, denn sie ist aus Plastik. In the yellow bag, because it's made of plastic.
A: Und die Pfandflasche? And the deposit bottle?
B: Die bringst du zurück zum Supermarkt. Dafür bekommst du das Pfand wieder. You take that back to the supermarket. You get the deposit back for it.
A: Und die Gemüsereste? And the vegetable scraps?
B: In die braune Biotonne. Altpapier kommt in die blaue Tonne. In the brown organic-waste bin. Waste paper goes in the blue bin.
A: Das ist komplizierter, als ich dachte. That's more complicated than I thought.
B: Man gewöhnt sich schnell daran. You get used to it quickly.

② Climate Change — Der Klimawandel

A: Die Sommer werden immer heißer, oder? The summers are getting hotter and hotter, aren't they?
B: Das liegt am Klimawandel. Je mehr CO₂ wir ausstoßen, desto wärmer wird es. That's because of climate change. The more CO₂ we emit, the warmer it gets.
A: Und was kann man dagegen tun? And what can you do about it?
B: Weniger Energie verbrauchen, zum Beispiel. Und weniger fliegen. Use less energy, for example. And fly less.
A: Wegen meiner Arbeit muss ich leider oft fliegen. Because of my job I unfortunately have to fly a lot.
B: Dann nimm wenigstens im Urlaub den Zug. Then at least take the train on holiday.

③ Getting Around — Rad und Bahn

A: Fährst du mit dem Auto zur Arbeit? Do you go to work by car?
B: Nein, ich nehme das Fahrrad. Es ist nicht zu weit, um zu radeln. No, I take the bike. It isn't too far to cycle.
A: Und im Winter? And in winter?
B: Dann fahre ich mit der Bahn. Ich habe ein Monatsticket, deshalb brauche ich kein Auto. Then I go by train. I have a monthly ticket, so I don't need a car.
A: Das spart bestimmt viel Geld. That surely saves a lot of money.
B: Ja, und die Luft in der Stadt wird dadurch auch besser. Yes, and the air in the city gets better as a result, too.

④ Shopping Sustainably — Regional und saisonal

A: Entschuldigung, ist das Gemüse aus der Region? Excuse me, is the vegetable from the region?
B: Ja, alles regional und saisonal, außer den Tomaten. Die kommen aus dem Gewächshaus. Yes, everything is regional and seasonal, except the tomatoes. They come from the greenhouse.
A: Gibt es Verpackungen aus Plastik? Is there plastic packaging?
B: Nein, wir packen alles in Papiertüten. Am besten bringen Sie eigene Beutel mit. No, we pack everything in paper bags. It's best to bring your own bags.
A: Das mache ich gern. Haben Sie auch Eier ohne Verpackung? I'm happy to do that. Do you have eggs without packaging too?
B: Ja, aber die müssen Sie in Ihre eigene Dose legen. Yes, but you have to put them in your own box.

⑤ Saving Energy — Strom sparen

A: Unsere Stromrechnung ist so hoch, dass wir dringend sparen müssen. Our electricity bill is so high that we urgently have to save.
B: Du solltest LED-Lampen kaufen und Geräte ganz ausschalten, statt sie im Standby zu lassen. You should buy LED lamps and switch devices off completely instead of leaving them on standby.
A: Und die Heizung? And the heating?
B: Dreh sie nachts herunter. Jedes Grad weniger spart Energie, das merkst du schnell. Turn it down at night. Every degree less saves energy, and you notice it quickly.
A: Ich überlege, eine Solaranlage zu installieren, damit wir weniger zahlen. I'm thinking about installing solar panels so that we pay less.
B: Das lohnt sich bestimmt auf Dauer. That will surely be worth it in the long run.

⑥ A Day in Nature — Wandern im Nationalpark

A: Wohin wandern wir am Samstag? Where shall we hike on Saturday?
B: Wir könnten in den Nationalpark fahren. Die Landschaft ist so schön, dass man kaum aufhören will zu fotografieren. We could go to the national park. The landscape is so beautiful that you hardly want to stop taking photos.
A: Gute Idee. Wir sollten nichts im Wald zurücklassen, sodass die Natur sauber bleibt. Good idea. We shouldn't leave anything in the forest, so that nature stays clean.
B: Klar. Und wir nehmen den Zug statt des Autos. Of course. And we'll take the train instead of the car.
A: Dann brauchen wir gute Schuhe. Der Weg ist zu steinig, um in Sandalen zu gehen. Then we need good shoes. The path is too stony to walk in sandals.

Three verbs — drei Verben

Recyceln ("to recycle") ends in -eln, so the ich form drops an -e (ich recycle) and the participle is recycelt. Vermeiden ("to avoid") is a strong, inseparable verb (vermied, hat vermieden). Verbrauchen ("to use up, consume") is regular and inseparable.

🧩 Cause and Effect — Ursache und Folge

You already know weil, wegen and deshalb. Here is the complete toolbox, sorted by what you want to say and by what happens to the verb.

1. Giving a cause — "because"

WordTypeVerbExample
weilconjunctionlastIch fahre Rad, weil es umweltfreundlich ist.
daconjunction ("since", usually first)lastDa es so heiß ist, bleibe ich zu Hause.
dennjoinernormal orderIch fahre Rad, denn es ist umweltfreundlich.
wegen + genitivepreposition—Wegen des Klimawandels wird es wärmer.
aufgrund + genitivepreposition (formal)—Aufgrund der Hitze blieb die Schule zu.
durch + accusativepreposition ("by means of")—Durch den Verkehr entsteht viel Lärm.
Das liegt an + dativeexpression—Das liegt am Klimawandel. (an dem)

2. Giving a result — "so", "therefore"

WordVerbExample
deshalb / deswegen / dahersecond (right after it)Es regnet kaum, deshalb ist der Boden trocken.
dadurch ("as a result")secondAutos fahren weniger, dadurch wird die Luft besser.
sodass (or so dass)lastEs regnete lange, sodass der Fluss über die Ufer trat.
so + adjective … dasslastEs ist so heiß, dass man kaum arbeiten kann.
zu + adjective … um … zuinfinitive at the endEs ist zu heiß, um draußen zu arbeiten.
genug … um … zuinfinitive at the endDie Anlage ist groß genug, um das Haus zu versorgen.
Which Group Is It? A quick test: can the word start a sentence by itself with the verb right after it? Deshalb, dadurch, daher can (Deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause), so they are adverbs: verb second. Weil, da, sodass, dass can't start an independent sentence, so they are conjunctions: verb last. Denn is a joiner and leaves the order alone. Add this to the word-order map from Course 3, Chapter 12.

🧱 Building Compound Words — Zusammengesetzte Wörter

German builds long nouns by sticking short ones together. It looks daunting but works by a simple rule: the last word decides the gender and the plural, and the first words describe it.

CompoundBreakdownGender fromEnglish
der KlimawandelKlima + der Wandelder Wandelclimate change
die MülltrennungMüll + die Trennungdie Trennungwaste separation
der StromverbrauchStrom + der Verbrauchder Verbrauchelectricity consumption
das PlastikverbotPlastik + das Verbotdas Verbotplastic ban
die SonnenenergieSonne(n) + die Energiedie Energiesolar energy
der UmweltschutzUmwelt + der Schutzder Schutzenvironmental protection
das VerkehrsmittelVerkehr(s) + das Mitteldas Mittelmeans of transport
The Little Linking Letters Often a small letter joins the parts: -s (Verkehrsmittel, Arbeitsplatz), -n / -en (Sonnenenergie, Straßenbahn), or nothing (Mülltrennung). There's no rule that always works, so learn them with the word. To read a long compound, work from the right: Umweltschutzorganisation = an Organisation for Schutz of the Umwelt.

Word endings that build words

EndingMeaningGenderExamples
-ungaction, result (from a verb)dietrennen → die Trennung; verpacken → die Verpackung
-keit / -heitquality (from an adjective)dienachhaltig → die Nachhaltigkeit; gesund → die Gesundheit
-era person or thing that doesderverbrauchen → der Verbraucher
-barcan be …-ed(adjective)recycelbar (recyclable); erneuerbar (renewable)
-frei / -loswithout(adjective)plastikfrei (plastic-free); kostenlos (free of charge)
-freundlich…-friendly(adjective)umweltfreundlich; kinderfreundlich

🔮 How Likely? — Wahrscheinlichkeit

When you talk about the future or about causes, you need words that say how sure you are. They sit in the middle of the sentence, or at the start, with the verb second.

CertaintyGermanExample
Certainsicher, bestimmt, ganz sicherDie Temperaturen werden sicher weiter steigen.
Likelywahrscheinlich, vermutlichEs wird wahrscheinlich mehr regnen.
Possiblevielleicht, möglicherweiseVielleicht gibt es bald weniger Verkehr.
Unlikelykaum, wohl nichtDas Eis wird kaum zurückkommen.
Not at allauf keinen Fall, bestimmt nichtDas passiert auf keinen Fall von allein.

📖 Reading — Lesen

A short text about plastic and rubbish (an invented example). Underline the linking words for cause and effect.

Real German Tip — Sorting Rubbish Rubbish separation (Mülltrennung) is part of everyday life in Germany. The usual categories are packaging made of plastic and metal (the gelbe Tonne or gelbe Sack), paper and cardboard (often a blue bin), organic waste (a brown bin), and general waste (Restmüll), while glass goes to bottle banks, sorted by colour. Disposable bottles and cans carry a deposit (Pfand) that you get back at a collection machine in shops. The exact colours and rules differ from town to town, so check your local collection calendar (Abfallkalender) or ask a neighbour.
Real German Tip — Energiewende, Public Transport and the Outdoors Die Energiewende ("energy transition") is the common name for Germany's move from coal and nuclear power towards renewable energy, and you'll see it in the news. Many people use public transport and bicycles; there is a monthly nationwide ticket for regional services, the Deutschlandticket, though its terms and price can change. And Germans love the outdoors: wandern (hiking), forests and national parks are popular, with signposted paths and a tradition of leaving nature as you found it. Check current details before you plan anything.

✍️ Try It Yourself — Übungen

Say or write each answer first, then click to check. Decide: is the word a conjunction (verb last) or an adverb (verb second)?

1. Say: "Because of climate change, the summers are getting hotter."

Show answer

Wegen des Klimawandels werden die Sommer heißer. (Wegen + genitive; the verb werden is second.)

2. Say: "It's so hot that you can hardly work."

Show answer

Es ist so heiß, dass man kaum arbeiten kann. (So … dass; the modal kann goes last.)

3. Say: "I take my bike, so I don't need a car" (with deshalb).

Show answer

Ich fahre mit dem Rad, deshalb brauche ich kein Auto. (Deshalb is first in the second clause, so the verb brauche comes right after it.)

4. Say: "It's too far to go on foot."

Show answer

Es ist zu weit, um zu Fuß zu gehen. (Zu … um … zu + infinitive.)

5. What gender are Klimawandel, Mülltrennung and Stromverbrauch?

Show answer

der Klimawandel (der Wandel), die Mülltrennung (die Trennung), der Stromverbrauch (der Verbrauch). (The last word decides.)

6. Say: "In future it will probably rain more."

Show answer

In Zukunft wird es wahrscheinlich mehr regnen. (In Zukunft first, so wird is second; regnen at the end.)

Coming Up in Chapter 10 You can now explain causes and effects and talk about the environment. Next: relationships and celebrations: friends, dating, weddings and family events, with the language of feelings and personal stories.
