German Basic Conversation 4

Chapter 8 · Culture & Entertainment: Films, Books, Music & Reviews

🎬 Culture and Entertainment — Kultur und Unterhaltung

Buy cinema and museum tickets, talk about a film or a book, recommend music, and write a short review. The grammar this time builds the tools of an opinion: more relative clauses (dessen, deren, preposition + relative pronoun, was) and the double conjunctions (sowohl … als auch, weder … noch, nicht nur … sondern auch).

💬 Six Conversations — Gespräche

Read each one aloud, then check the English. Dialogs 1 and 5 are formal (Sie); the rest are between friends (du). The one film named by title in dialog 2 is real (it is set in East Germany and won the Oscar for best foreign-language film); everything else is invented.

① At the Box Office — An der Kinokasse

A: Guten Abend. Good evening. Two tickets for the new film at eight p.m., please.
B: Gern. Gladly. Would you like to see it dubbed, or in the original with subtitles?
In the original with subtitles, if that's available.
Yes, the eight o'clock screening is in the original with German subtitles. Which seats would you like?
A: Was ist noch frei? What's still free?
Row ten in the middle, or row two at the side.
A: Reihe zehn, bitte. Was macht das zusammen? Row ten, please. What does that come to?

② About a Film — Wie fandest du den Film?

A: Wie fandest du „Das Leben der Anderen“? What did you think of "The Lives of Others"?
B: Sehr gut! Very good! It's set in East Germany and is about a man who spies on a couple of artists.
A: Hat er nicht einen Oscar gewonnen? Didn't it win an Oscar?
Yes, as best foreign-language film. I found it both gripping and moving.
A: Und die Schauspieler? And the actors?
Convincing, especially the lead actor, whose role was very difficult.
A: Das klingt gut. Ich muss ihn mir unbedingt ansehen. That sounds good. I really must watch it.

③ A Book — Worum geht es?

A: Hast du ein Buch, das du empfehlen kannst? Do you have a book you can recommend?
I'm reading a novel right now that completely grips me.
A: Worum geht es? What is it about?
About a family that begins a new life after the war.
A: Und wie ist das Ende? And how does it end?
I won't tell you! But everything I've read so far was great.

④ Music — Welche Musik hörst du gern?

A: Welche Musik hörst du gern? What music do you like to listen to?
Almost anything that isn't too loud. I like neither heavy metal nor techno.
A: Ich höre gern Klassik. I like classical music. On Saturday an orchestra is playing whose conductor is very famous.
B: Klingt gut. Gibt es noch Karten? Sounds good. Are there still tickets?
Either we buy them online, or we ask at the box office on the night.
B: Lass uns online schauen. Let's look online.

⑤ At the Museum — Im Museum

A: Guten Tag, gibt es eine Ermäßigung für Studenten? Good day, is there a discount for students?
B: Ja, mit Ausweis zahlen Sie die Hälfte. Yes, with ID you pay half.
A: Wann beginnt die Führung? When does the guided tour start?
B: Um vierzehn Uhr. Sie dauert eine Stunde. At two p.m. It lasts an hour.
A: Darf man fotografieren? Are you allowed to take photos?
Photography isn't allowed in the exhibition rooms. You'll find the cloakroom on the left.

⑥ Writing a Review — Eine Rezension schreiben

I'd like to write a review of the film. Can you help me?
B: Klar. Sure. Begin with a short summary, without giving too much away.
A: Und dann? And then?
Say what you liked and what you didn't. For example: the film is not only exciting but also thought-provoking.
A: Und am Ende? And at the end?
B: Schreib ein Fazit: Würdest du ihn empfehlen? Write a conclusion: would you recommend it?

Three verbs — drei Verben

Sich ansehen ("to watch, to look at") is separable and takes a dative reflexive pronoun (Chapter 1): Ich sehe mir den Film an. Verraten ("to give away, to betray") has an umlaut in du and er and is not separable. Berühren ("to touch, to move emotionally") is regular and not separable.

🧩 More Relative Clauses — Relativsätze

In Course 3, Chapter 8 you built relative clauses with der / die / das. Here are the pieces still missing: the genitive (dessen, deren), a preposition before the pronoun, and was.

The full set of relative pronouns

The noun is…NominativeAccusativeDativeGenitive ("whose")
der — masculinederdendemdessen
die — femininediediederderen
das — neuterdasdasdemdessen
pluraldiediedenenderen
GermanWhat happens
der Hauptdarsteller, dessen Rolle schwierig warGenitive: "whose". Dessen replaces the possessive, and the noun that follows (Rolle) takes no article.
die Autorin, deren Bücher ich gern leseFeminine or plural owner: deren.
der Film, über den alle sprechenPreposition + pronoun: the preposition comes first, and the pronoun takes the case it needs (über + accusative: den).

was — after "all", "nothing", "something" and whole ideas

Use was (not das) after alles, nichts, etwas, vieles, das and after a superlative, and to refer back to a whole statement:

GermanEnglish
Alles, was ich gelesen habe, war großartig.Everything I've read was great.
Es gibt nichts, was mir besser gefällt. There's nothing I like better.
Das Beste, was ich je gesehen habe. The best thing I've ever seen.
He praised the film, which surprised me.
Dessen and Deren: Watch the Article The English "whose" is followed by the noun, and so is dessen / deren: der Mann, dessen Frau Ärztin ist. But the second noun then has no article of its own (never dessen die Frau). Choose dessen or deren from the gender of the owner, not of the thing owned: die Frau, deren Mann (owner: feminine) and der Mann, dessen Frau (owner: masculine).

🔀 Double Conjunctions — Doppelte Konjunktionen

These pairs connect two ideas and are very common in reviews and opinions:

PairMeaningExample
Details to Remember weder … noch already contains a negative, so don't add nicht or kein. sowohl … als auch and weder … noch link two items and don't change the verb position: Er mag weder Fisch noch Fleisch. entweder … oder and zwar … aber can link two whole clauses; after zwar the clause has normal word order, and aber doesn't change the order of what follows it. nicht nur … sondern auch is the review phrase par excellence: it lets you give praise in two steps.

📖 Reading — Lesen

A short film review (of an invented film). Find the relative clauses with dessen and deren and the double conjunctions.

Real German Tip — Dubbing and Cinema In Germany most foreign films in the cinema are dubbed (synchronisiert), and many people grow up with the German voices. In larger cities some cinemas also show films im Original (OV) or im Original mit Untertiteln (OmU), which are marked on the programme, so check before you buy. Seats are often numbered and booked by row (Reihe), and some cinemas have a weekly discount day.
Real German Tip — Culture in Germany Theatre, opera, orchestras and museums receive a lot of public funding in Germany, and tickets are often cheaper than visitors expect, with discounts (Ermäßigung) for students and others. Books have a fixed price (Buchpreisbindung): a new book costs the same in every shop. A well-known TV tradition is the crime series Tatort, shown on Sunday evenings, which many people watch together. If you want to practise listening, it's a popular topic of conversation: Hast du gestern den Tatort gesehen?
