Chapter 6 · Online Shopping & Consumer Rights: Orders, Complaints & Warranty

🛒 Online Shopping and Consumer Rights — Online einkaufen

Place an order and sort out payment problems, chase a missing parcel, report a damaged item, return goods, claim under warranty, and complain firmly but politely. The grammar this time covers verbs with fixed prepositions (warten auf, sich beschweren über) and the da- and wo- words (darauf, worüber) that go with them.

💬 Six Conversations — Gespräche

Read each one aloud, then check the English. These are customer-service conversations, so they are formal (Sie). Notice how often a verb is followed by a fixed preposition.

Three verbs — drei Verben

Sich beschweren ("to complain") is reflexive and takes über + accusative. Zurückschicken ("to send back") is separable: Ich schicke das Paket zurück. Liefern ("to deliver") is regular and is often used in the passive: Die Ware wird geliefert.

🧩 Verbs with Fixed Prepositions — Verben mit Präpositionen

Many German verbs come with a fixed preposition that doesn't follow the place rules (Course 3, Chapters 4 and 5). You have met sich bewerben um, sich interessieren für, sich freuen auf and teilnehmen an. Learn each verb together with its preposition and case, as one unit.

Verb + prepositionCaseExample
Mostly Accusative, With a Few Exceptions Most of these combinations take the accusative (warten auf, sich ärgern über, sich freuen auf). A few take the dative, including everything with mit, von, nach, zu and, among the auf verbs, bestehen auf. The best habit is to learn the verb in a short, typical sentence, such as Ich warte auf mein Paket, and then copy the pattern.

🔗 da- and wo- Words — Pronominaladverbien

When the thing after the preposition is a thing or an idea (not a person), German replaces "preposition + it" with a da-word and "preposition + what?" with a wo-word. If the next letter is a vowel, an -r- is inserted: darauf, worauf.

Prepositionda- (it / that)wo- (what?)
aufdaraufworauf
überdarüberworüber
fürdafürwofür
mitdamitwomit
nachdanachwonach
umdarumworum
andaranworan
zudazuwozu
About a thing (wo- / da-)About a person (preposition + pronoun)
Worauf wartest du? — Auf mein Paket. / Darauf warte ich schon lange.Auf wen wartest du? — Auf meinen Bruder. / Ich warte auf ihn.
Worüber ärgerst du dich? — Ich ärgere mich darüber.Über wen ärgerst du dich? — Ich ärgere mich über ihn.
Wofür ist die Gebühr? — Dafür ist sie.Für wen ist das Geschenk? — Für sie.

da- pointing ahead to a clause

A da-word often announces the dass clause or the zu + infinitive that follows. It is very common in complaints and formal requests:

GermanEnglish
Ich bestehe darauf, dass das Problem heute gelöst wird.I insist that the problem is solved today.
Ich warte darauf, dass mein Geld zurückkommt.I'm waiting for my money to come back.
Ich ärgere mich darüber, dass das Paket zu spät kam.I'm annoyed that the parcel came too late.
Ich verlasse mich darauf, dass Sie antworten.I'm relying on you to reply.
Ich habe mich darauf gefreut, das Gerät zu benutzen.I was looking forward to using the device.
The Rule of Thumb When a verb with a fixed preposition is followed by a whole clause, add the matching da-word before the comma: warten darauf, dass …, sich ärgern darüber, dass …. English leaves the preposition out ("I'm waiting for it to arrive"); German always has it. And remember that damit can also be the conjunction "so that" (Chapter 5): the first is a pronoun, the second starts a verb-last clause.

📈 The Complaint Ladder — Die Beschwerdestufen

As in advice (Course 3, Chapter 9), German lets you choose how firm to be. Start friendly and move up only if you need to.

LevelGermanEnglish
1. Neutral reportLeider ist der Artikel beschädigt angekommen.Unfortunately the item arrived damaged.
2. RequestKönnten Sie mir bitte einen Ersatz schicken?Could you please send me a replacement?
3. DissatisfactionIch bin mit der Lieferung nicht zufrieden.I'm not satisfied with the delivery.
4. Firm demandIch bestehe auf einer Erstattung des Kaufpreises.I insist on a refund of the purchase price.
5. DeadlineIch bitte Sie, mir den Betrag bis zum 30. Oktober zu erstatten.I ask you to refund the amount by 30 October.
6. ConsequenceFalls ich keine Antwort erhalte, werde ich mich an die Verbraucherzentrale wenden. If I don't get a reply, I will contact the consumer advice centre.

Real German Tip — Your Rights When Buying Online For most online purchases from a seller in the EU, you generally have a right to withdraw within 14 days (Widerrufsrecht): you must tell the seller clearly that you want to withdraw, and then send the goods back. Some goods are excluded, such as items made to your order, and who pays for the return can differ. For faulty goods, German law gives you a statutory warranty (Gewährleistung, normally two years for new goods), which is different from a voluntary Garantie from the maker. These are general rules, so check the seller's terms (AGB) and, if in doubt, ask a consumer advice centre.
Real German Tip — Where to Get Help The Verbraucherzentrale (consumer advice centres, with local branches) gives advice on complaints, contracts and online shopping, often for a small fee or free. Keep the order confirmation, the Bestellnummer, photos of any damage, and every email or letter you send, with dates. Complaints in writing are far easier to prove than a phone call, so follow up a call with an email: Wie telefonisch besprochen, … ("As discussed by phone, …").
