Chapter 3 · Driving & Cars: Renting, Fuel, Repairs & Traffic Rules

🚗 Driving and Cars — Autofahren

Rent a car, fill up, report a breakdown, give and follow directions, understand parking and traffic rules, and talk to a garage. The grammar this time is the language of rules and signs: müssen, dürfen, brauchen and how their negatives differ, the passive with modal verbs (Hier darf nicht geparkt werden), and the difference between wird gesperrt and ist gesperrt.

💬 Six Conversations — Gespräche

Read each one aloud, then check the English. Dialogs 1, 3, 5 and 6 are formal (Sie); 2 is a quick exchange at a petrol station; 4 is between friends (du).

① Renting a Car — Ich möchte ein Auto mieten

Good day, I'd like to rent a car for three days.
B: Gern. Welche Größe möchten Sie: einen Kleinwagen oder einen Kombi? Gladly. What size would you like: a small car or an estate?
A: Einen Kleinwagen, bitte, am liebsten mit Automatik. A small car, please, preferably an automatic.
B: Haben Sie Ihren Führerschein dabei? Und eine Kreditkarte für die Kaution? Do you have your driving licence with you? And a credit card for the deposit?
A: Ja, beides. Ist eine Vollkaskoversicherung im Preis enthalten? Yes, both. Is fully comprehensive insurance included in the price?
Yes, with an excess of three hundred euros. The car has to be returned with a full tank.

② At the Petrol Station — An der Tankstelle

No, it's a petrol car. Look inside the fuel flap, it says there.
A: Super E10 oder Super? Super E10 or Super?
B: Beides geht bei diesem Modell. E10 ist etwas billiger. Both work for this model. E10 is a little cheaper.
A: Und wo bezahle ich? And where do I pay?
B: Erst tanken, dann an der Kasse sagen, an welcher Säule Sie waren. Fill up first, then tell them at the till which pump you were at.

B: Und danach? And after that?
After two kilometres you get on the motorway and stay in the right-hand lane.

A: Entschuldigung, hier darf man nicht parken. Excuse me, you're not allowed to park here.
B: Wirklich? Ich sehe kein Schild. Really? I can't see a sign.
A: Dort hinten: Halteverbot. Hier darf nicht geparkt werden. Back there: no stopping. Parking isn't allowed here.

🧩 Rules and Signs — Regeln und Schilder

1. müssen, dürfen, brauchen — the negatives matter

The big trap for English speakers: nicht müssen does not mean "must not". Compare:

IdeaPositiveNegative
müssen (must, have to)Man muss einen Parkschein ziehen.
You have to take a ticket.
Man muss nicht bar zahlen.
You don't have to pay cash.
dürfen (may, be allowed to)Man darf hier parken.
You may park here.
Man darf nicht hier parken.
You must not park here (forbidden).
brauchen (need)Ich brauche einen Führerschein.
I need a licence.
Du brauchst nicht zu fahren.
You needn't drive (with zu!).
sollen (is supposed to)Man soll langsam fahren.
You're supposed to drive slowly.
Man soll nicht telefonieren.
You shouldn't phone.
Whodürfenmüssenbrauchen
ichdarfmussbrauche
dudarfstmusstbrauchst
er / sie / es / mandarfmussbraucht
wirdürfenmüssenbrauchen
ihrdürftmüsstbraucht
sie / Siedürfenmüssenbrauchen
The Trap in One Line nicht dürfen = forbidden (Hier darf man nicht parken); nicht müssen / nicht brauchen zu = not necessary (Du musst nicht kommen. Du brauchst nicht zu kommen.). Say "Das darfst du nicht" and you've forbidden something; say "Das musst du nicht" and you've said it's optional. Brauchen is the only one of these that takes zu + infinitive.

2. The passive with modal verbs

Signs and rules often leave out who does the action. Combine a modal verb with the passive: modal (second) + past participle + werden (last). You learnt the passive in Course 3, Chapter 11.

With manPassive with a modal

Whatever the modal, the last word is always the infinitive werden. The thing affected (die Bremsbeläge, das Auto) becomes the subject, so the modal agrees with it: die Bremsbeläge müssen (plural), das Auto muss (singular).

3. wird gesperrt or ist gesperrt?

The passive with werden describes an action in progress; with sein it describes the result, the state that is true now. Signs and traffic news use the second all the time.

Action (werden)State (sein)
Die Straße wird gesperrt.
The road is being closed.
Die Straße ist gesperrt.
The road is closed.
Das Parkhaus wird geöffnet.
The car park is being opened.
Das Parkhaus ist geöffnet.
The car park is open.
Der Parkplatz wird besetzt.
The space is being taken.
Der Parkplatz ist besetzt.
The space is taken.
Das Auto wird repariert.
The car is being repaired.
Das Auto ist repariert.
The car is repaired (finished).

4. Prepositions on the road — Wo? and Wohin?

Directions bring back the two-way prepositions from Course 3, Chapter 4: movement towards takes the accusative, and location takes the dative.

Wo? (dative)Wohin? (accusative)
(the place where you turn)Fahr geradeaus bis zur Kreuzung. (bis zu + dative)

📖 Reading — Lesen

Rental companies publish rules like these. This is an invented example (real conditions differ from company to company), written in the style of a contract. Notice how many modals with the passive it uses.

Mietwagen: Wichtige Bedingungen (Beispiel)

Real German Tip — Rules of the Road Germany drives on the right. At junctions with no signs, rechts vor links applies: traffic coming from the right has priority. On the Autobahn, some stretches have no general speed limit, but there's a recommended speed of 130 km/h (Richtgeschwindigkeit), and many sections do have limits, so watch the signs. In cars you must carry a warning triangle, a hi-vis vest and a first-aid kit (Verbandskasten). Fines (Bußgeld) for speeding are issued after a speed camera flash (Blitzer), and parking fines can arrive by post, including for rental cars.
Real German Tip — Fuel, Winter Tyres and TÜV Fuel is usually Super E10, Super (E5) or Diesel: the right one is printed inside the fuel flap, and E10 isn't suitable for every car. In winter conditions (ice, snow, slush), you're required to have suitable tyres (Winterreifen), and for most cars a regular roadworthiness test, the TÜV (Hauptuntersuchung), is due every two years. In a breakdown, the motoring club ADAC is well known for roadside help, and in an accident or emergency the number is 112.
