Advice & Suggestions

German Basic Conversation 3

Chapter 9 · Giving Advice & Making Suggestions

💡 Advice and Suggestions — Ratschläge und Vorschläge

Tell a friend what they should do, give tips for a trip or for learning German, suggest a plan, and agree or politely disagree with someone else's idea. The grammar this time covers a ladder of ways to give advice (from du musst to du könntest), the friendly little words doch and mal, and zu + infinitive clauses (Ich empfehle dir, jeden Tag zu lesen).

💬 Six Short Conversations — Gespräche

Read each one aloud, using the pronunciation line. CAPITALS show the stressed part of a word. All six use du, because advice is most often exchanged between friends and colleagues. For Sie, the forms are in the tables below.

Three verbs — drei Verben

Empfehlen ("to recommend") changes e → ie in du and er. Vorschlagen ("to suggest") is separable and has an umlaut (du schlägst … vor). Raten ("to advise") takes a dative person: Ich rate dir, …, and also has an umlaut (du rätst, er rät).

🪜 The Advice Ladder — Ratschläge

German speakers choose how strong their advice is. Here are the main ways, from firmest to gentlest. The same ideas work with Sie: Sie müssen, Sie sollten, Sie könnten.

StrengthGermanEnglish
1. Strong, urgentDu musst zum Arzt gehen.
Du musst unbedingt Apfelstrudel probieren.
You must go to the doctor. / You absolutely have to try apple strudel.
2. Normal adviceDu solltest zum Arzt gehen.
Sie sollten früh buchen.
You should go to the doctor. / You should book early.
3. An optionDu könntest mit deinem Chef sprechen.
Wir könnten an den See fahren.
You could talk to your boss. / We could go to the lake.
4. RecommendingIch empfehle dir, früh zu buchen.
Ich rate dir, den Arzt anzurufen.
I recommend that you book early. / I advise you to call the doctor.
5. Friendly nudgeProbier doch mal den Strudel!
Schau doch mal Serien auf Deutsch.
Why not try the strudel? / Why not watch series in German?
6. Open questionWie wäre es mit einem Ausflug?
Warum nicht an den See fahren?
How about a day trip? / Why not go to the lake?
Whosollen → solltekönnen → könnteDon't confuse with
ichich sollteich könntePast (Chapter 7): ich konnte = "I was able to" (no umlaut). Advice: ich könnte = "I could / I might" (with umlaut).
dudu solltestdu könntest
er / sie / eser sollteer könnte
wirwir solltenwir könnten
ihrihr solltetihr könntet
sie / Siesie / Sie solltensie / Sie könnten
What Are sollte and könnte? They are the polite, softer "would-be" forms of sollen and können. Du musst is a fact ("it's necessary"), but du solltest is a gentler opinion ("it would be a good idea"), and du könntest offers a possibility instead of an order. German calls this form the Konjunktiv II, and it is the subject of Chapter 10. For now, learn sollte, könnte and wäre (in Wie wäre es mit …?) as ready-made forms for advice and suggestions.

🎈 doch and mal — Little Words, Big Effect

German uses small "particle" words to change the tone of a sentence. Two are very useful for advice, and both go in the middle of the sentence, after the verb.

GermanEffect
Komm doch mit!doch makes a command a friendly invitation or suggestion: "Why don't you come along!"
Probier es mal.mal ("just, for once") softens the order and makes it casual: "Just give it a try."
Schau doch mal Serien auf Deutsch.Together, doch mal sounds especially friendly and encouraging.
Frag ihn doch einfach!"Just ask him!" Adding einfach ("simply") reinforces the idea.

These words don't translate exactly, which is why they're easy to skip. But listen for them: they're everywhere in everyday conversation, and using one or two makes your advice sound natural instead of bossy.

🔗 Infinitive with zu — Ich empfehle dir, … zu …

After verbs like empfehlen, raten, vorschlagen, vergessen, versuchen and after phrases like Es ist wichtig / gut / besser, German uses a comma, then the rest of the clause, ending in zu + infinitive. (You met um … zu in Chapter 5.)

GermanEnglish
Ich empfehle dir, jeden Tag zu lesen.I recommend that you read every day.
Ich rate Ihnen, früh zu buchen.I advise you to book early.
Es ist wichtig, genug zu schlafen. It's important to get enough sleep.
Ich habe vergessen, den Arzt anzurufen.I forgot to call the doctor.
Versuch doch, mehr zu sprechen.Try to speak more.
Three Rules 1. Separable verbs: zu goes between the prefix and the verb, written as one word: anzurufen, mitzukommen, aufzustehen. 2. No zu after modals: Du kannst lesen, Du solltest lesen (not zu lesen). The same goes for werden and for gehen, lassen, hören with another verb. 3. Comma: put a comma before the zu clause, especially when it has its own extra words, as in the examples above.

🤝 Suggesting and Replying — Vorschläge machen

You want to…German
Suggest "shall we?"Sollen wir ins Kino gehen? / Wollen wir etwas essen?
Suggest "let's"Lass uns gehen! / Lasst uns anfangen! / Lassen Sie uns beginnen. (du / ihr / Sie)
Suggest "we could"Wir könnten ins Museum gehen.
Suggest "how about"Wie wäre es mit einem Kaffee? (mit + dative, Chapter 4)
Say yes warmlyGute Idee! / Das klingt gut. / Gern!
Say yes cautiouslyDas ist keine schlechte Idee.
Say no politelyHm, ich weiß nicht. Ich möchte lieber …
Say it's worth itDas lohnt sich. (= it's worth it)
Reassure someoneMach dir keine Sorgen! / Das wird schon.
Say "by all means" / "definitely not"Auf jeden Fall! / Auf keinen Fall!

Real German Tip — Tipp or Trinkgeld? Der Tipp is a piece of advice or a hint (Ich habe einen Tipp für dich). Money you leave for a waiter is das Trinkgeld (literally "drink money"), which you usually round up (Stimmt so, "keep the change"). Don't say Ich gebe dir einen Tipp if you mean money. And der See (masculine, "lake") is different from die See (feminine, "the sea"), although das Meer is the usual word for the sea.
Real German Tip — Direct Advice Isn't Rude German speakers are often more direct with advice than people in Britain or the US: Du musst unbedingt … from a friend is a sign of enthusiasm, not rudeness. With strangers, in formal settings and with someone you don't know well, soften it with Sie sollten, Sie könnten or Ich empfehle Ihnen. There's even a proverb that unwanted advice can sting: Ratschläge sind auch Schläge ("advice is also a blow"), so it's usual to ask first: Darf ich dir einen Tipp geben?

✍️ Try It Yourself — Übungen

Say each answer out loud first, then click to check. Choose the right strength of advice and watch the position of the verb.

1. Tell a friend they should go to the doctor.

Show answer

Du solltest zum Arzt gehen. (Solltest is the gentle "should"; gehen goes to the end; zum = zu dem.)

2. Suggest politely (to someone you call Sie) that they could ask their boss.

Show answer

Sie könnten Ihren Chef fragen. (Könnten + infinitive at the end; Ihren Chef is accusative.)

3. Tell a friend you recommend reading every day.

Show answer

Ich empfehle dir, jeden Tag zu lesen. (Empfehlen + dative dir; comma; zu lesen at the end.)

4. Tell a friend to try the apple strudel (der Apfelstrudel), in a friendly way.

Show answer

Probier doch mal den Apfelstrudel! (Imperative probier; doch mal makes it a warm suggestion; den Apfelstrudel is accusative.)

5. Suggest a day trip to the lake in two different ways.

Show answer

Wie wäre es mit einem Ausflug an den See? Or: Wir könnten an den See fahren. (Mit + dative einem Ausflug; an den See is a movement, so accusative, Chapter 4.)

6. Say you would rather have something else, and suggest sushi.

Show answer

Ich möchte lieber etwas anderes. Wie wäre es mit Sushi? (Lieber is the comparative of gern, Chapter 8.)

Coming Up in Chapter 10 You now know three ready-made "soft" forms: sollte, könnte and wäre. Next: wishes, hopes and what you would do. This is the chapter that explains them, and adds würde, hätte and wenn … dann for imagining things.
