Wishes & Hopes

German Basic Conversation 3

Chapter 10 · Wishes, Hopes & What You Would Do

🌠 Wishes, Hopes and Dreams — Wünsche und Träume

Make polite requests, say what you wish for, talk about what you would do if things were different, and wish other people well. This is the chapter that explains the "would" forms you met as ready-made chunks (sollte, könnte, wäre) and adds würde, hätte and wenn … würde sentences. German calls this the Konjunktiv II.

💬 Six Short Conversations — Gespräche

Read each one aloud, using the pronunciation line. CAPITALS show the stressed part of a word. Look for würde, wäre, hätte and könnte: they mark something that is a wish, a politeness, or an imagined situation instead of a fact.

Three verbs — drei Verben

Sich wünschen ("to wish for") is reflexive with a dative pronoun (ich wünsche mir, du wünschst dir), because the pronoun means "for myself" (dative, Chapter 4). Hoffen ("to hope") and träumen ("to dream") are regular; träumen takes von + dative: Ich träume von einem Haus am Meer.

🧩 The "Would" Forms — Der Konjunktiv II

The Konjunktiv II (the "subjunctive") is the form of the verb you use when something is not a plain fact: a polite request, a wish, or an imagined situation. In English the signal is the word "would" (or "could", "were"). In German there are two ways to form it, and for everyday speech you need only these.

1. würde + infinitive — for most verbs

WhowürdeExample
ichwürdeIch würde um die Welt reisen.
duwürdestWürdest du auch aufhören zu arbeiten?
er / sie / eswürdeEr würde ein Café eröffnen.
wirwürdenWir würden gern früher gehen.
ihrwürdetWürdet ihr mitkommen?
sie / SiewürdenWürden Sie mir bitte helfen?

The verb that says what you would do goes to the end as an infinitive, like a modal verb: Ich würde dir gern helfen. Würden Sie bitte …? is also a very polite way of asking: Würden Sie bitte das Fenster schließen? ("Would you please close the window?").

2. Their own forms — sein, haben and the modals

For sein, haben and the modal verbs, speakers don't use würde; they use special short forms, built from the past forms of Chapter 7 by adding an umlaut and -e.

Whosein → wärehaben → hättekönnen → könnte
ichich wäreich hätteich könnte
dudu wärstdu hättestdu könntest
er / sie / eser wäreer hätteer könnte
wirwir wärenwir hättenwir könnten
ihrihr wärtihr hättetihr könntet
sie / Siesie / Sie wärensie / Sie hättensie / Sie könnten
VerbWould-form (ich / er)Example
sollensollteDu solltest zum Arzt gehen. (same as past form, Chapter 9)
müssenmüssteWir müssten früher losfahren.
dürfendürfteDürfte ich Sie etwas fragen? (very polite)
wollenwollteIch wollte fragen, ob … (= I was wondering whether …)
The Sentence You Already Know You now know why Wie wäre es mit …? (Chapter 9) is "How would it be with …?", why Du solltest is "You ought to", and why Ich hätte gern … is "I would like …". Each is a would-form, and the ready-made phrase works because its verb is in this special mood. Compare the real (indicative) Ich habe Hunger ("I'm hungry") with Ich hätte gern eine Suppe ("I'd like a soup"): the second is softer and more polite.

🔀 wenn … würde — Imagining Things

For things that are unreal or unlikely use wenn with a would-form in both parts. Remember the difference from Chapter 6:

Kind of "if"GermanEnglish
Real (could easily happen): indicativeWenn ich Zeit habe, rufe ich an.If I have time (and I might), I'll call.
Unreal (imagined): would-formsWenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich anrufen. If I had time (but I don't), I'd call.
Unreal, with seinWenn ich reich wäre, würde ich ein Haus kaufen. If I were rich, I'd buy a house.
Unreal, with a modalWenn ich mehr Geld hätte, könnte ich reisen. If I had more money, I could travel.
Main part firstIch würde reisen, wenn ich Zeit hätte.I'd travel if I had time.
AdviceWenn ich du wäre, würde ich fragen. If I were you, I'd ask.
Which Form Goes Where? 1. In the wenn part, use the short form where there is one (hätte, wäre, könnte): Wenn ich Zeit hätte, not wenn ich Zeit haben würde. 2. In the other part, würde + infinitive is the usual form for ordinary verbs (würde reisen), but wäre / hätte / könnte for those verbs (ich könnte reisen). 3. The wenn part sends its verb to the end, and when it comes first the main verb follows the comma (…, würde ich anrufen), as in Chapters 2 and 6. A dann may be added for emphasis: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, dann würde ich anrufen.

🙏 Wishing and Hoping — Wünschen und Hoffen

Wishes and hopes are expressed in different ways, and only one of them uses the would-forms:

PatternGermanNotes
sich (dat.) etwas wünschenIch wünsche mir ein ruhiges Leben.wish for a thing; dative reflexive (mir, dir, sich)
jemandem etwas wünschenIch wünsche dir viel Glück.wish someone something; person in the dative
hoffen, dass …Ich hoffe, dass du kommst.a real hope: ordinary verb, at the end of the dass part
Hoffentlich …Hoffentlich regnet es nicht."hopefully": normal word order
träumen vonIch träume von einem Haus am Meer.von + dative (einem Haus)
wäre gern / hätte gernIch wäre gern reich. Ich hätte gern mehr Zeit.an unreal wish, with the would-forms

20Ich hätte gern …ikh HET-uh GAIRNI would like …phrasethe polite way to order
Real German Tip — Ich hätte gern In a café, shop or restaurant, Ich hätte gern … (or Ich möchte …) is the normal polite way to order. Ich will … ("I want") sounds blunt, and Ich habe gern … doesn't mean "I would like". Adding bitte and a friendly tone makes any of these natural: Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee, bitte.
Real German Tip — Luck and Superstition Germans say Ich drücke dir die Daumen ("I'm pressing my thumbs for you") where English speakers cross their fingers, and Toi, toi, toi (often with a light knock on wood) before an exam or performance. It's bad luck to wish someone a happy birthday before the day itself, so people say Herzlichen Glückwunsch only on or after the birthday, never early.

✍️ Try It Yourself — Übungen

Say each answer out loud first, then click to check. Use würde for ordinary verbs and the short forms for sein, haben and the modals.

1. Politely order a coffee.

Show answer

Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee, bitte. (Hätte + gern; einen Kaffee is accusative masculine.)

2. Very politely ask whether you could have the menu.

Show answer

Könnte ich bitte die Speisekarte haben? (Könnte is the softer form of kann.)

3. Say: "If I had a lot of money, I'd travel round the world."

Show answer

Wenn ich viel Geld hätte, würde ich um die Welt reisen. (Hätte goes last in the wenn part; then würde comes straight after the comma; reisen at the end.)

4. Say that you wish for more time.

Show answer

Ich wünsche mir mehr Zeit. (Dative reflexive mir.) Or: Ich hätte gern mehr Zeit.

5. Give a friend advice: "In your place, I would speak to the boss."

Show answer

An deiner Stelle würde ich mit dem Chef sprechen. (An deiner Stelle is dative; würde is second; sprechen at the end; mit dem Chef, dative.)

6. Say that you hope the weather will be nice tomorrow.

Show answer

Ich hoffe, dass das Wetter morgen schön ist. Or: Hoffentlich ist das Wetter morgen schön. (A real hope uses the ordinary indicative, not würde.)

Coming Up in Chapter 11 You now have the main verb forms you need for everyday conversation. Next: customs, festivals and traditions: what people celebrate, how and when, and how to describe the customs of your own country.
