German Basic Conversation 3

Chapter 8 · Technology & Media: Phones, Internet & the News

📱 Technology & Media — Technik und Medien

Buy and fix a phone, ask about Wi-Fi, solve a login problem, make a video call, and talk about how you get the news. The grammar this time gives you two tools for describing and comparing things: relative clauses (das Handy, das ich gekauft habe) and comparatives and superlatives (schneller, am besten).

💬 Six Short Conversations — Gespräche

Read each one aloud, using the pronunciation line. CAPITALS show the stressed part of a word. Dialogs 1 to 4 are formal (Sie); in 5 and 6 two friends say du.

Three verbs — drei Verben

All three are separable (or contain a separable part). Herunterladen ("to download") has an umlaut in du and er (du lädst … herunter). Einschalten ("to switch on") and sich anmelden ("to log in", literally "to register oneself") end in -t / -d in the stem, so they add an -e- (du schaltest, du meldest).

🧩 Relative Clauses — Relativsätze

A relative clause adds information about a noun: "the phone that I bought", "the technician who helped me". German builds it from a small clause with der / die / das as the linking word (the relative pronoun), a comma on each side, and the verb at the end, just as after weil and wenn.

Choosing the pronoun

Two questions decide it. 1. What is the gender and number of the noun you're describing? That gives you the row. 2. What is its job inside the relative clause (subject, object, or after a dative preposition)? That gives you the column.

The noun is…Subject (nominative)Object (accusative)Dative
der — masculinederdendem
die — femininediedieder
das — neuterdasdasdem
pluraldiediedenen

The forms are exactly the articles you know, except for denen (dative plural).

GermanWhy that pronoun?
Das Handy, das ich gekauft habe, ist sehr gut.
The phone that I bought is very good.
Handy is neuter; in the clause it's the object (I bought it): das.
Der Techniker, der mir geholfen hat, war nett.
The technician who helped me was nice.
Techniker is masculine; he is the subject of geholfen hat: der.
Die App, die ich benutze, ist kostenlos.
The app that I use is free.
App is feminine; object: die.
Ich suche einen Podcast, der über Politik spricht.
I'm looking for a podcast that talks about politics.
Podcast is masculine; subject of spricht: der.
Das Handy, mit dem ich telefoniere, ist alt.
The phone I make calls with is old.
Mit takes the dative (Chapter 4); neuter: dem. The preposition comes before the pronoun.
The Checklist 1. Find the noun you're describing and note its gender and number. 2. Put a comma. 3. Write the pronoun with the case it needs inside the new clause. 4. Say the rest of the clause with the conjugated verb last (gekauft habe: the helper habe is last). 5. Close with another comma and carry on with the main sentence. Unlike English, German never leaves the pronoun out: "the phone I bought" must be das Handy, das ich gekauft habe.

⚖️ Comparing — Vergleichen

To compare, add -er to the adjective, and use als ("than"). For the highest degree, use am … -sten.

BasicComparative (more)Superlative (most)Example
schnellschnelleram schnellstenDas Handy ist schneller als das alte.
billigbilligeram billigstenDas ist am billigsten.
kleinkleineram kleinstenDieser Bildschirm ist kleiner.
teuerteureram teuerstenDas ist teurer als gedacht. (drops the e)
altälteram ältestenMein Handy ist älter. (umlaut)
großgrößeram größtenDas Display ist größer. (umlaut; -en not -sten)
gutbesseram bestenPodcasts gefallen mir am besten. (irregular)
vielmehram meistenIch zahle mehr als du. (irregular)
gernlieberam liebstenIch höre lieber Radio. (irregular)
hochhöheram höchstenDer Preis ist höher. (irregular)
MeaningGerman
just as … asDieses Handy ist so schnell wie das andere.
not as … asEs ist nicht so teuer wie das neue Modell.
before a noun (add the Chapter 1 endings)Ich möchte ein schnelleres Handy. / Das ist das beste Modell.
als or wie? Als after a comparative (schneller als); wie after so … (so schnell wie). Mixing them up is one of the most common errors. And remember that the comparative before a noun takes an ending like any adjective: ein schnelleres Handy (neuter after ein: -es), die beste App (feminine after die: -e).

Real German Tip — Words That Look English Das Handy is the normal German word for a mobile phone, but it's a German invention that sounds English; English speakers won't use "handy" that way. Das WLAN (pronounced "vay-lahn") is Wi-Fi, der Beamer is a projector, and das Smartphone is also common. A place with no signal is called a Funkloch ("radio hole"), which you'll hear travellers complain about on trains and in the countryside.
Real German Tip — News, TV and Data Protection The main evening news on the public channel ARD, the Tagesschau, has been broadcast at 20:00 for decades and is a good source of clear, standard German for learners. Households in Germany pay a broadcasting contribution (Rundfunkbeitrag) that funds public radio and television. Online, you'll often see cookie banners (Cookies akzeptieren / ablehnen): Germany and the EU take Datenschutz (data protection) seriously, which is why you're asked.

✍️ Try It Yourself — Übungen

Say each answer out loud first, then click to check. For relative clauses, ask yourself the gender of the noun and the job of the pronoun.

1. Say you're looking for a new phone (das Handy).

Show answer

Ich suche ein neues Handy. (Neuter accusative after ein: -es, as in Chapter 1.)

2. Say your phone doesn't work any more.

Show answer

Mein Handy funktioniert nicht mehr.

3. Say: "The phone that I bought is very good."

Show answer

Das Handy, das ich gekauft habe, ist sehr gut. (Neuter object: das; habe goes last in the relative clause; commas on both sides.)

4. Say this phone is faster than the old one.

Show answer

Dieses Handy ist schneller als das alte. (Comparative + als; das alte = the old one, with the weak ending -e.)

5. Say you like podcasts best.

Show answer

Podcasts gefallen mir am besten. Or: Ich höre am liebsten Podcasts. (Gut → besser → am besten; gern → lieber → am liebsten.)

6. Say you downloaded the app but you can't log in.

Show answer

Ich habe die App heruntergeladen, aber ich kann mich nicht anmelden. (The Perfekt of a separable verb: heruntergeladen. After kann the infinitive anmelden goes last, joined again.)

Coming Up in Chapter 9 You can now describe things, compare them, and handle everyday technology. Next: giving advice and making suggestions: Du solltest …, Du könntest …, Wie wäre es mit …?, and how to say what you think someone should do.
