Chapter 7 · Telling Your Story: Childhood, School & Life So Far

📖 Telling Your Story — Mein Leben

Say where you were born and grew up, describe your childhood and school days, talk about what you wanted to be, and tell the story of your life so far. This chapter completes your past tenses: war and hatte (the past of sein and haben), the past of the modal verbs (konnte, musste, wollte), and als for "when" in the past.

💬 Six Short Conversations — Gespräche

Three verbs — drei Verben

Aufwachsen ("to grow up") is separable and has an umlaut in du and er (du wächst … auf). Umziehen ("to move house") is separable and regular. Sich erinnern ("to remember") is reflexive and goes with an + accusative, just like the verbs in Chapter 5: Ich erinnere mich an meine Kindheit.

⏪ The Past: Perfekt and "Short Past" — Vergangenheit

German has two common ways to talk about the past. In conversation you use the Perfekt (ich habe gemacht, ich bin gegangen) for most verbs, as in Basic Conversation 2, Chapter 9. But for sein, haben and the modal verbs the short form, called the Präteritum, is normal in speech, because it's shorter and easier. Everything else in this chapter is built from these two.

1. war and hatte — sein and haben

Whosein → warhaben → hatte
ichich warich hatte
dudu warstdu hattest
er / sie / eser warer hatte
wirwir warenwir hatten
ihrihr wartihr hattet
sie / Siesie / Sie warensie / Sie hatten

Examples: Meine Kindheit war schön. Wir hatten einen Garten. Wo warst du gestern? Note that ich and er / sie / es have the same form (war, hatte), as they do for the modal verbs.

2. Modal verbs in the past

PresentPast (ich / er)Example
können (can)konnteIch konnte stundenlang lesen.
müssen (must)mussteIch musste eine Brille tragen.
wollen (want)wollteIch wollte Pilot werden.
dürfen (may)durfteIch durfte lange aufbleiben.
sollen (should)sollteIch sollte früh ins Bett gehen.
The Pattern Drop the umlaut, add -te: können → konnte, müssen → musste, dürfen → durfte. The endings: ich konnte, du konntest, er konnte, wir konnten, ihr konntet, sie / Sie konnten. The second verb goes to the end as an infinitive, exactly as in the present: Ich konnte nicht kommen. After weil the modal still goes last: weil ich eine Brille tragen musste.

3. Everything else — the Perfekt

For all other verbs, keep using the Perfekt. The question is whether to use haben or sein as the helper. Sein is used for verbs of movement and change of state; haben for nearly everything else.

InfinitivePerfektMeaning
machenich habe gemachtI did / made
arbeitenich habe gearbeitetI worked
lernenich habe gelerntI learned
studierenich habe studiertI studied (no ge-)
findenich habe gefundenI found
heiratenich habe geheiratetI got married
umziehenich bin umgezogenI moved house
aufwachsenich bin aufgewachsenI grew up
werdenich bin gewordenI became
bleibenich bin gebliebenI stayed
fahren / gehenich bin gefahren / gegangenI went (by vehicle / on foot)
geboren werdenich bin geborenI was born
Spoken or Written? The Präteritum of other verbs (ich ging, ich arbeitete, er schrieb) is common in books and newspapers but much less so in conversation, especially in the south of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. So for everyday talk, follow this recipe: war / hatte / modals in the short past, and all other verbs in the Perfekt. That recipe is enough for the whole course.

🕰️ als, wenn and Time Words — "When"

In Chapter 6 you learned that wenn is "if / whenever". For one particular time in the past German uses als. Like weil and wenn, it sends the verb to the end of its clause.

UseGermanEnglish
als: one time or period in the pastAls ich zehn war, wollte ich Pilot werden. When I was ten, I wanted to be a pilot.
alsAls ich nach Berlin gezogen bin, hatte ich keine Freunde. When I moved to Berlin, I had no friends.
wenn: repeated in the past ("whenever")Wenn wir Ferien hatten, sind wir ans Meer gefahren.Whenever we had holidays, we went to the sea.
wenn: present or futureWenn ich Zeit habe, rufe ich an.When / if I have time, I'll call.
wann: question word onlyWann sind Sie umgezogen? When did you move?

Years from 1100 to 1999 are read as hundreds (neunzehnhundertfünfundneunzig); from 2000 they are read as thousands (zweitausendacht). You can say 1995 alone or im Jahr 1995, but never in 1995. Vor and mit take the dative (Chapter 4), which is why it's vor fünf Jahren (with -n on the plural noun).

Real German Tip — The School System After Grundschule (usually four years), children in Germany go to different types of secondary school. The Gymnasium leads to the Abitur, which opens the door to university; other routes lead more directly to an Ausbildung, a combination of paid on-the-job training and part-time vocational school that is highly respected. Details vary from one federal state to another, so when someone describes their schooling, Welche Schule haben Sie besucht? ("Which school did you attend?") is a good follow-up question.
Real German Tip — Asking About Someone's Past German small talk about the past often starts with Wo sind Sie aufgewachsen? ("Where did you grow up?") and Was haben Sie früher gemacht? ("What did you do before?"). It's friendly to ask, but an answer about family or schooling can be personal, so follow the other person's lead and don't press if they give a short answer.

✍️ Try It Yourself — Übungen
