Post, Bank & Bills

German Basic Conversation 3

Chapter 3 · Post Office, Bank & Paying Bills

📮 Post Office, Bank & Bills — Post, Bank und Rechnungen

Send letters and parcels, collect a parcel, open an account, take money out, deal with a cash machine that swallows your card, and pay a bill. The grammar this time carries on from weil: polite indirect questions (Können Sie mir sagen, wo …?), plus ob, dass and the useful little word man.

💬 Six Short Conversations — Gespräche

Three verbs — drei Verben

Schicken is regular. Abheben is a separable verb (ich hebe … ab). Überweisen starts with über-, which here is not separable: the prefix stays attached and the stress falls on the second part (ü-ber-VY-zen). A useful rule: stressed prefixes (AB-heben, AN-rufen) separate, while unstressed ones (über-, unter-, ver-, be-, er-) do not.

🧩 Clauses with ob and dass — Nebensätze

Chapter 2 showed that weil sends the conjugated verb to the end. The same happens after ob ("whether / if") and dass ("that"). Learn the pattern once and it works for all three.

Polite indirect questions

Instead of asking a question directly, you can start with Können Sie mir sagen, … ("Can you tell me …"), which sounds more polite. The question then becomes part of the sentence, with the verb at the end. A question that has a question word (wo, wann, wie, was) keeps it; a yes/no question uses ob.

Direct questionPolite indirect question
Wo ist die Bank?Können Sie mir sagen, wo die Bank ist?
Wann öffnet die Post?Können Sie mir sagen, wann die Post öffnet?
Wie viel kostet das Porto?Können Sie mir sagen, wie viel das Porto kostet?
Kann ich bar zahlen?Können Sie mir sagen, ob ich bar zahlen kann?
Ist das Paket schon da?Können Sie mir sagen, ob das Paket schon da ist?

dass — "that"

GermanEnglish
Ich glaube, dass der Automat kaputt ist.I think (that) the machine is broken.
Ich weiß, dass die Bank um vier schließt.I know (that) the bank closes at four.
Ich hoffe, dass das Paket morgen kommt.I hope (that) the parcel comes tomorrow.
Es ist wichtig, dass Sie hier unterschreiben. It's important that you sign here.
Don't Mix Up das and dass Das (one s) is "the" for neuter nouns or "that/this" (Das ist ein Brief). Dass (two s's) only introduces a clause and always sends the verb to the end. When you can't tell, ask: is there a conjugated verb at the end of this part? Then it's dass. In English you can often drop "that" (I think it's broken), but German always needs dass and the comma before it.
The Pattern for weil, ob and dass All three are followed by a "verb-last" clause: weil + reason, ob + yes/no question, dass + statement. The comma comes before the word. With a helper verb the helper goes last (ob ich bar zahlen kann), and a separable verb is joined again (dass er die Karte einzieht).

man — "you" or "one" in general

Man means people in general, the "you" of instructions and rules, and it takes the same verb ending as er. It is very common at counters and in offices: Was braucht man dafür? ("What do you need for that?")

GermanEnglish
Man braucht einen Ausweis. You need an ID.
Man muss hier unterschreiben. You have to sign here.
Man kann auch online überweisen. You can also transfer online.
Wie macht man das?How do you do that?

Real German Tip — Bills and Bank Transfers In Germany, bills usually arrive as a Rechnung with the bank details printed on it: an IBAN (a German one starts with DE) and a Verwendungszweck (the "reference" you must put on the transfer so they know what it's for). Many regular payments, such as rent or a phone contract, are set up as a Dauerauftrag (standing order that you arrange) or a Lastschrift (direct debit that the company collects). Cash is still widely used, but some shops, offices and small businesses take only cash or only cards, so asking Kann ich mit Karte zahlen? before you order is wise.
Real German Tip — Parcels and Post Offices If nobody is at home, a parcel may be left with a neighbour or taken to a collection point, and you'll find a Benachrichtigung (notification card) in your letterbox saying where to pick it up. Take that card and photo ID with you. Post-office services are often in a shop or kiosk rather than a separate building. Opening hours and prices change, so check the sign or ask Was kostet das Porto? before you hand it over.

✍️ Try It Yourself — Übungen

Say each answer out loud first, then click to check. Remember: after ob and dass, the verb goes last.

1. Ask how long a letter to Scotland takes.

Show answer

Wie lange dauert ein Brief nach Schottland?

2. Politely ask whether you can pay by card (start with Können Sie mir sagen, …).

Show answer

Können Sie mir sagen, ob ich mit Karte zahlen kann? (A yes/no question needs ob, and kann goes last.)

3. Say you think the machine is broken.

Show answer

Ich glaube, dass der Automat kaputt ist. (Comma before dass; ist at the end.)

4. Politely ask where the cash machine is.

Show answer

Können Sie mir sagen, wo der Geldautomat ist? (Keep the question word wo; ist goes to the end.)

5. Say that you need an ID card to collect a parcel (use man).

Show answer

Man braucht einen Ausweis, um das Paket abzuholen. If you haven't met um … zu yet, the simpler version is just as good: Für das Paket braucht man einen Ausweis.

6. Say you'd like to transfer money to a German account (das Konto; use deutsch with the right ending).

Show answer

Ich möchte Geld auf ein deutsches Konto überweisen. (Konto is neuter; after ein an accusative neuter adjective takes -es, as in Chapter 1.)

Coming Up in Chapter 4 You can now handle the post, the bank and your bills, and you know how verb-last clauses work. Next: looking for a place to live: viewings, renting and asking about details. It's also where the dative case is finally explained, which has been hiding in phrases like mir, Ihnen and zu meinen Eltern.
