Three verbs — drei Verben

Buchen is completely regular. Mitnehmen is a separable verb whose main part, nehmen, changes its vowel in the du and er forms (nimmst, nimmt). And werden is the helper you need for the future: it's irregular, and you'll use it in the next section.

🔮 Talking About the Future — Die Zukunft

German has a future tense, but in everyday conversation it is used less than you might expect. There are two ways to talk about what will happen.

Way 1 — the present tense plus a time word (the usual way)

GermanEnglish
Morgen fliege ich nach Wien.I'm flying to Vienna tomorrow.
Nächstes Jahr fahren wir nach Japan.Next year we're going to Japan.
Am Samstag buche ich das Hotel. On Saturday I'll book the hotel.

The time word (morgen, nächste Woche, im September, am Samstag) tells the listener it is about the future, so the verb can stay in the present. This is what you will hear most often, and it's what you've been using in Basic Conversation 2, Chapter 3 (Ich gehe morgen ins Kino).

Way 2 — werden + the infinitive at the end

WhowerdenExample
ichwerdeIch werde viele Fotos machen.
duwirstDu wirst die Stadt lieben.
er / sie / eswirdEs wird bestimmt schön.
wirwerdenWir werden die Altstadt besichtigen.
ihrwerdetIhr werdet viel Spaß haben.
sie / SiewerdenSie werden pünktlich ankommen.

Just as with kann and möchte, the second verb goes to the end of the sentence in its basic (infinitive) form: Wir werden die Altstadt besichtigen. Use werden mainly for predictions (Es wird bestimmt schön, "it will certainly be nice"), promises (Ich werde dich anrufen), and a more formal plan or itinerary (as in dialog ④). For an ordinary arrangement, the present tense with a time word is more natural.

Careful: werden Has Two Jobs On its own, werden means "to become": Es wird kälter ("it's getting colder", Basic Conversation 2, Chapter 6). With an infinitive at the end it makes the future: Es wird regnen ("it will rain"). And don't confuse werden with wollen ("to want to"): Ich will nach Wien fahren means "I want to go to Vienna", not "I will".

🔗 Giving Reasons with weil — Weil ich…

To say "because", use weil. It joins two parts of a sentence with a comma, and it has one important effect on word order: the conjugated verb jumps to the very end of the weil part.

Two simple sentencesJoined with weil
Ich fahre nach Wien. Ich liebe Musik.Ich fahre nach Wien, weil ich Musik liebe.
Wir fliegen. Es ist schneller.Wir fliegen, weil es schneller ist.
Ich kann nicht fliegen. Ich muss arbeiten.Ich kann nicht fliegen, weil ich arbeiten muss.
Ich gehe früh ins Bett. Wir fahren morgen früh ab.Ich gehe früh ins Bett, weil wir morgen früh abfahren.
Three Details to Notice 1. Two verbs: when there is a helper verb (muss, kann, will) plus an infinitive, the helper verb goes last: weil ich arbeiten muss. 2. Separable verbs: the prefix joins the verb again: Wir fahren morgen ab, but weil wir morgen früh abfahren. 3. The reason can come first: then the main sentence's verb follows the comma immediately: Weil das Hotel teuer ist, suchen wir eine Ferienwohnung. ("Because the hotel is expensive, we're looking for a holiday flat.")
A Note on Everyday Speech To the question Warum? ("why?") you can simply answer with weil and the reason: Warum fährst du nach Wien? — Weil ich Musik liebe. You may hear native speakers put the verb second after weil in casual conversation (weil ich liebe Musik), but the verb-at-the-end form is the standard one, the one to learn and use, and the only one you should write.

🧭 Where To? — Wohin?

The word for "to" depends on where you're going. Learn these as chunks for now. The reasons behind in die and ans come in Chapter 4, when the dative is explained.

Real German Tip — Urlaub or Ferien? Der Urlaub is time off from work, the word to use for your own holiday (Ich habe nächste Woche Urlaub). Die Ferien (always plural) are the school and university holidays, so you'll hear Sommerferien and Schulferien. German school holidays differ from state to state, which is why peak travel times and prices vary so much from week to week.
Real German Tip — Booking and Board Hotel prices in Germany and Austria are often quoted pro Person or pro Zimmer (per room), so ask which. Halbpension is breakfast and dinner; Vollpension is all three meals; nur Übernachtung is the room only. Before you travel, check current entry and passport rules for your destination, since they change and depend on your nationality.

✍️ Try It Yourself — Übungen

Say each answer out loud first, then click to check. Watch the verb position after weil.

1. Say you're going to Italy in September.

Show answer

Im September fahre ich nach Italien. (Present tense plus a time word. With Im September first, the verb stays second: fahre ich.)

2. Say you're going to Switzerland (die Schweiz).

Show answer

Ich fahre in die Schweiz. (Countries with an article take in die, not nach.)

3. Say you're going to Vienna because you love music.

Show answer

Ich fahre nach Wien, weil ich Musik liebe. (The verb liebe goes to the end of the weil part.)

4. Say you're flying on Saturday because you have to work on Friday.

Show answer

Ich fliege am Samstag, weil ich am Freitag arbeiten muss. (The helper verb muss goes last.)

5. Say that on the first day you will look round the old town (use werden).

Show answer

Am ersten Tag werde ich die Altstadt besichtigen. (Werde is second, and besichtigen goes to the end. With wir: werden wir.)

6. Tell the travel agent you'd like to rebook your trip, and that it's because you can't fly on Saturday.

Show answer

Ich möchte meine Reise umbuchen, weil ich am Samstag nicht fliegen kann. (Möchte gives the infinitive umbuchen at the end of the first part; in the weil part, kann is last.)

Coming Up in Chapter 3 You can now plan, book and change a trip, say what will happen, and give reasons. Next: the post office, the bank and paying bills: sending parcels, changing money, and dealing with everyday paperwork.
