German Basic Conversation 3

Chapter 1 · Buying Clothes: Sizes, Fit & Returns

👕 Buying Clothes — Kleidung kaufen

Ask for what you want in a clothes shop, describe it with colours and sizes, try things on, say whether they fit, and exchange or return them. This is also the chapter where the adjective endings that you have so far copied as ready-made chunks (einen blauen Pullover) are finally explained.

💬 Six Short Conversations — Gespräche

🧩 Adjective Endings — Wie endet das Adjektiv?

After ist an adjective never changes (Der Pullover ist rot). But in front of a noun it gets an ending, which depends on the article before it and on the noun's gender. Here are the two groups you need first, for the subject of a sentence (nominative) and the object (accusative).

After "ein / eine / kein" (a / an / no)

GenderSubject (nominative)Object (accusative)
der — masculineein roter Pullovereinen roten Pullover
die — feminineeine rote Jackeeine rote Jacke
das — neuterein rotes Hemdein rotes Hemd
pluralrote Schuherote Schuhe

After "der / die / das" (the)

GenderSubject (nominative)Object (accusative)
der — masculineder rote Pulloverden roten Pullover
die — femininedie rote Jackedie rote Jacke
das — neuterdas rote Hemddas rote Hemd
pluraldie roten Schuhedie roten Schuhe
The Rule Behind the Endings Every noun phrase has to show its gender and role somewhere. After der / die / das the article already does that, so the adjective only needs a weak ending: -e, or -en in the masculine object and the plural. After ein, the article is bare in three places (ein for masculine subject, and for neuter subject and object), so there the adjective takes the "strong" ending that der or das would have shown: ein roter Pullover (like der), ein rotes Hemd (like das). Compare einen in the masculine object, which already shows its role, so the adjective just adds -en.
Practical Shortcut After der / die / das: add -e, except in the masculine object and in the plural, where it is -en (der rote, den roten, die roten). After ein / eine: -er for a masculine subject, -e for feminine, -es for neuter, and -en for a masculine object (ein roter, eine rote, ein rotes, einen roten). Plural with no article: -e. And no ending at all after ist / sind. Dative endings (after in dem, mit der and so on) come in Chapter 4.
Colours as Nouns On their own, after in, colours are capitalised nouns with no ending: Haben Sie das in Schwarz? / in Dunkelblau. Before a noun they're adjectives and take the endings above: eine schwarze Hose. Colours from Basic Conversation 2, Chapter 4 (rot, blau, grün, gelb, schwarz, weiß, grau, braun) all work this way; rosa and orange never take an ending.

Real German Tip — Sizes German clothes and shoe sizes follow the European system (for example, a size 38 jacket or size 42 shoes), which doesn't match UK or US numbers. Don't convert in your head: look at the label or the size chart in the shop, or simply say Welche Größe ist das? ("What size is this?") and try it on. Trying things on in the Umkleidekabine is completely normal.
Real German Tip — Returning Goods In a shop in Germany, taking something back just because you changed your mind is usually up to the shop's own policy (often called Kulanz, goodwill), and the Kassenbon is what you'll be asked for, so keep it. Many shops will exchange an item or give a Gutschein, but they don't have to; faulty goods are a different matter. For things you buy online, EU rules give you a standard right to withdraw within 14 days. If it matters, ask before you buy: Kann ich das umtauschen?

✍️ Try It Yourself — Übungen

Say each answer out loud first, then click to check. Watch the adjective endings.

1. Say you're looking for a blue jacket.

Show answer

Ich suche eine blaue Jacke. (Jacke is feminine: eine blaue, object and subject look the same.)

2. Say you're looking for a black pullover.

Show answer

Ich suche einen schwarzen Pullover. (Pullover is masculine and it's the object, so einen schwarzen.)

3. Say the trousers are too tight and ask for a size bigger.

Show answer

Die Hose ist zu eng. Haben Sie eine Größe größer? (After ist the adjective eng has no ending.)

4. Ask if you can try on the dress.

Show answer

Kann ich das Kleid anprobieren? (Anprobieren goes to the end after kann.)

5. Say you like the red shirt (das Hemd).

Show answer

Das rote Hemd gefällt mir. (After das: das rote Hemd.)

6. Say you want to exchange this pullover because it's too small, and hand over the receipt.

Show answer

Ich möchte diesen Pullover umtauschen. Er ist zu klein. Hier ist der Kassenbon.

Coming Up in Chapter 2 You can now buy and return clothes, and you've met your first real grammar topic. Next: planning a trip — destinations, travel plans, and talking about the future, with weil to give reasons.
