German Basic Conversation 2

Chapter 7 · Eating Out: Restaurants, Dietary Needs & Complaints

🍽️ Eating Out — Im Restaurant

Book a table, order a full meal, say what you can't eat, politely complain when something isn't right, and pay the German way. German Basic Conversation 1, Chapter 8 covered ordering a drink and a snack in a café; this chapter takes you through a whole restaurant meal.

Three verbs — drei Verben

Nehmen and empfehlen change their vowel with du and er (du nimmst, er empfiehlt). Dürfen (may / to be allowed to) is a modal verb like können and müssen in Chapter 3: ich darf with no ending, and the second verb goes to the end.

"Was darf es sein?" Literally "What may it be?", this is what a server or shop assistant says to ask "What can I get you?" You'll hear it in restaurants and in shops. The polite reply uses Ich nehme… ("I'll take…") or Ich hätte gern… ("I would like…"). Learn ich hätte gern as a ready-made phrase; it's the politest way to order. You can also use Darf ich…? to ask permission: Darf ich die Speisekarte sehen?

🚫 "Kein" — Saying You Have or Eat None

To say "no / not any" before a noun, German uses kein instead of nicht: Ich esse kein Fleisch (I eat no meat). It follows the same pattern as ein.

Gender"a" (object)"no / not any"Example
der (masculine)einenkeinenIch esse keinen Fisch.
die (feminine)einekeineIch trinke keine Milch.
das (neuter)einkeinIch esse kein Fleisch.
plural—keineIch esse keine Nüsse.
Kein or Nicht? Use kein to negate a noun that would have ein or no article: Ich habe kein Geld. Use nicht to negate a verb, an adjective, or a noun that has der / die / das: Ich esse das Fleisch nicht; Das ist nicht gut. Note that kein changes exactly like ein — including the masculine einen → keinen change you learned in Chapter 5.

Allergies Are Serious — Be Direct If an allergy is serious, don't rely on a hint: say Ich bin allergisch gegen Nüsse clearly and ask Sind Nüsse drin? before you order. For a preference rather than an allergy, Ich esse kein Fleisch is perfectly normal and understood. Restaurants in German-speaking countries are generally used to these requests.

😕 Complaints — Beschwerden

A polite complaint in German has three parts: Entschuldigung (to get attention), the problem, and optionally what you'd like done.

GermanSay itEnglish
Entschuldigung, das ist kalt.ent-SHOOL-di-goong, dahs ist kahltExcuse me, this is cold.

Real German Tip — Paying and Tipping In Germany you usually ask for the bill yourself (Zahlen, bitte! or Die Rechnung, bitte); the server won't bring it unasked. The server often asks Zusammen oder getrennt? (together or separate), and each person may pay their own share at the table, which is completely normal. A service charge is normally included in the menu prices, but it is usual to leave a small Trinkgeld by rounding up or adding around 5–10%. You say the final amount when you pay (Fünfzig, bitte or Stimmt so — "keep the change") rather than leaving money on the table.
Real German Tip — Water Isn't Automatic In many German restaurants a glass of tap water does not arrive by default, and when you order water it is often bottled and charged for. You'll be asked still (without bubbles) or mit Kohlensäure / sprudelnd (with bubbles): Ein Wasser, bitte — still. Finally, Guten Appetit! (GOO-ten ah-peh-TEET) is what people say before they start eating.
