Three verbs — drei Verben

Werden (to become / will) is irregular and is the key to "will get…" in forecasts. Frieren (to feel cold, to freeze) and schwitzen (to sweat) are regular; schwitzen already ends in an "ts" sound, so du and er forms are identical.

🌤️ The Weather — Das Wetter

Most weather descriptions start with Es ist… plus an adjective. A few use a verb instead.

EnglishGermanSay it
It's sunny.Es ist sonnig.es ist ZON-ikh
It's cloudy.Es ist bewölkt.es ist beh-VURLKT
It's windy.Es ist windig.es ist VIN-dikh
It's foggy.Es ist neblig.es ist NAY-blikh
It's cold / cool / warm / hot.Es ist kalt / kühl / warm / heiß.es ist kahlt / kül / vahrm / hice
It's raining.Es regnet.es RAYG-net
It's snowing.Es schneit.es SHNITE
It's pouring.Es regnet in Strömen.es RAYG-net in SHTRUR-men
The sun is shining.Die Sonne scheint.dee ZON-uh shint
There's a thunderstorm.Es gibt ein Gewitter.es gipt ine geh-VIT-er
"Es" Is Just a Placeholder In Es regnet and Es schneit the es doesn't stand for anything — it's there because a German sentence needs a subject, exactly like "It" in "It's raining". You'll also see es in Es gibt from Chapter 5. And remember the verb stays second: Morgen regnet es, not Morgen es regnet.
"Es ist kalt" vs "Mir ist kalt" Es ist kalt describes the weather. Mir ist kalt says you feel cold — literally "to me it is cold" — and Mir ist warm means you feel warm. Ich friere is stronger: "I'm freezing". Use mir ist as a ready-made phrase; the grammar (mir is the dative of ich) is for later, though you have already seen it in Die Wohnung gefällt mir.

🍂 The Seasons — Die Jahreszeiten

der Winter (winter)VIN-terim WinterDezember, Januar, Februar

Der → Den When You "Like" Something When a der-word is the thing you like, der changes to den — the same masculine change you saw with einen in Chapter 5: Ich mag den Sommer, Ich mag den Herbst. Die and das words don't change: Ich mag die Sonne. Mögen (to like) is a cousin of gern from Chapter 2.

Real German Tip — Celsius, Always German-speaking countries use Celsius, as in Britain, so Es sind 22 Grad is a pleasant day. Below null Grad (zero degrees) you'll hear minus: Es sind minus fünf Grad (minus five). When you talk about temperature you can also simply say Es hat 22 Grad in parts of southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland — a regional variant of Es sind 22 Grad.
Real German Tip — Weather as Small Talk Just as in English, a comment on the weather is a safe way to begin a conversation with a neighbour, a colleague or someone at a bus stop: Schönes Wetter heute, nicht wahr? or Schrecklich, dieser Regen! (Terrible, this rain!). A short answer plus a follow-up question (Und bei Ihnen? — "And where you are?") keeps it going.
