✔️ "Es gibt" — There Is, There Are

Es gibt is followed by what exists. The word for "a" takes a special form for der-words (masculine): einen. For the others it stays the same as you know it.

GenderNormal "a"After "es gibt"Example
der (masculine)eineinenEs gibt einen Balkon.
die (feminine)eineeineEs gibt eine Küche.
das (neuter)eineinEs gibt ein Bad.
plural—— (no word)Es gibt zwei Zimmer.
Only the "der" Words Change Words in the object position are in the "accusative", and only masculine nouns show it: ein Balkon becomes einen Balkon; ein Aufzug becomes einen Aufzug; mein becomes meinen. Eine and ein for die- and das-words stay the same. You first met this in Chapter 4 with einen Bart — now you know why it's einen.

📍 Where Things Are — Wo ist es?

Learn these as ready-made chunks. The grammar behind dem, der and vom is for a later course.

Real German Tip — Floors Count as in Britain In Germany, the Erdgeschoss is the ground floor and the erster Stock is the first floor above it — the same way floors are counted in Britain, and different from the United States, where the ground floor is called the first floor. So im dritten Stock is three flights of stairs up from the ground.
Real German Tip — Counting Rooms and Rent In German flat adverts a 3-Zimmer-Wohnung usually means three main rooms not counting the kitchen and bathroom, so it's a bigger flat than "three rooms" might suggest. The rent also comes in two forms: Kaltmiete is the rent alone, and Warmmiete includes heating and other running costs — always check which one a price means.
