Chapter 11 · Giving Opinions & Preferences

💭 Giving Opinions & Preferences — Meinungen und Vorlieben

Say what you think, ask what others think, agree and disagree politely, and give a reason. Until now you have mostly described facts; this chapter lets you join in a real conversation, where people share views and don't always agree.

Finden adds an extra -e- before -st and -t (like arbeiten and mieten earlier): du findest. Glauben is regular. Mögen (to like) is irregular: ich mag and er mag have no ending, like the modal verbs of Chapter 3.

🎯 Saying What You Think — "Ich finde…"

There are two easy patterns. Use whichever fits.

PatternExampleSay itEnglish
Ich finde + thing + adjectiveIch finde den Film toll.ikh FIN-duh dain FILM TOLI think the film is great.
Ich finde + thing (as "it")Ich finde ihn toll.ikh FIN-duh EEN TOLI think it's great.
Ich finde, + a full sentenceIch finde, die Miete ist zu teuer.ikh FIN-duh, dee MEE-tuh ist tsoo TOY-erI think the rent is too expensive.
Ich glaube, + a full sentenceIch glaube, das ist richtig.ikh GLOW-buh, dahs ist RIKH-tikhI think that's right.
Ihn, Sie, Es — "It" for Der, Die and Das English says "it" for everything. German uses the word matching the noun's gender: der Film → ihn (after finden, as object), die Stadt → sie, das Wetter → es. So Ich finde ihn toll (the film), Ich finde sie toll (the city), Ich finde es schrecklich (the weather). Only the masculine form (ihn) looks new — it's the same der-word change you've met since Chapter 5.
Finden vs Glauben Ich finde says how something seems to you — your opinion or judgement: Ich finde den Film toll. Ich glaube is closer to "I believe / I think (it's so)" — a belief or a guess: Ich glaube, er kommt später. When in doubt about a judgement, use finden.

👍 Agreeing and Disagreeing — Zustimmen und Widersprechen

From strong agreement to polite disagreement. Germans often soften disagreement with ein bisschen ("a little") or start by agreeing with part of it.

GermanSay itEnglish
Genau! / Stimmt!geh-NOW / SHTIMTExactly! / That's right!
Da hast du recht.dah hahst doo REKHTYou're right about that.
Das finde ich auch.dahs FIN-duh ikh OWKHI think so too.
Ich auch. / Ich nicht.ikh OWKH / ikh NIKHTMe too. / Not me.
Es geht. / Na ja.es GAYT / nah YAHIt's okay. / Well…
Da sehe ich das anders.dah ZAY-uh ikh dahs AHN-dersI see that differently.
Ich bin anderer Meinung.ikh bin AHN-de-rer MY-noongI'm of a different opinion.
Das stimmt, aber …dahs SHTIMT, AH-berThat's true, but…

🔗 Giving a Reason — "denn"

Denn means "because" and — very helpful for now — it doesn't change the word order: the verb stays in second place, as normal.

GermanSay itEnglish
Ich mag den Sommer, denn es ist lange hell.ikh mahk dain ZOM-er, den es ist LAHNG-uh HELI like summer, because it stays light for a long time.
Ich finde den Film gut, denn er ist lustig.ikh FIN-duh dain FILM GOOT, den air ist LOOS-tikhI think the film is good, because it's funny.
Ich koche nicht gern, denn ich habe keine Zeit.ikh KOKH-uh nikht GAIRN, den ikh HAH-buh KY-nuh TSITEI don't like cooking, because I have no time.
A Preview: "weil" Sends the Verb to the End You will also hear weil ("because"): Ich mag den Sommer, weil es lange hell ist. After weil (and dass, "that"), the conjugated verb jumps to the end of its part of the sentence. You don't need to produce this yet — denn does the same job with normal word order — but when you hear a verb at the end, this is usually why.

Real German Tip — "Wie geht's?" — "Es geht." Es geht means "It's okay / so-so" — neither good nor bad. If someone asks Wie geht's? and you answer Es geht, you're saying you're fine but not great. Germans often answer honestly rather than with an automatic "fine, thanks", so Es geht or Nicht so gut is perfectly acceptable, and it invites a follow-up question. The same word appears in Das geht ("That works") from Chapter 10.
Real German Tip — Directness Isn't Rudeness In German conversation it's normal to state an opinion plainly and to disagree openly, including with a colleague. That isn't unfriendly — it's often seen as honest. But a soft opener still helps, especially as a learner: Da sehe ich das ein bisschen anders is gentler than Das stimmt nicht, and starting with Das stimmt, aber… shows that you listened.
