German Basic Conversation 2

Chapter 10 · Phone Calls & Making Appointments

📞 Phone Calls & Appointments — Telefonieren und Termine

Answer the phone, ask for the person you want, leave a message, spell your name, and arrange, move or cancel an appointment. The phone is often the hardest place to use a new language, because you can't see the other person — so this chapter also gives you the phrases to ask someone to repeat or speak more slowly.

💬 Six Short Conversations — Gespräche

Read each one aloud, using the pronunciation line. CAPITALS show the stressed part of a word.

Three verbs — drei Verben

Sprechen changes its vowel with du and er (du sprichst). Anrufen is separable, as in Chapter 1: Ich rufe dich an. Passen (to suit / fit) is regular and is the everyday verb for appointments: Das passt mir.

"Passt es Ihnen?" — Does It Suit You? Passen with Ihnen / dir / mir is the standard way to check a time: Passt es Ihnen am Dienstag? (informal: Passt es dir am Dienstag?). Answer Das passt (mir) gut or Leider passt es mir nicht. The shorter Geht es am Mittwoch? ("Is Wednesday possible?") and Das geht ("That works") are equally common. As in earlier chapters, Ihnen / dir / mir are learned as chunks; the grammar comes later.

🔤 Spelling Your Name — Buchstabieren

Names get spelled out on the phone, and German letters have their own names. Ask Können Sie das buchstabieren? ("Can you spell that?") or be ready to spell yours: S – M – I – T – H = es – em – ee – tay – hah.

For the vowels with two dots you say A-Umlaut (ä), O-Umlaut (ö), U-Umlaut (ü), e.g. Müller: M – U-Umlaut – L – L – E – R. Notice that W sounds like English "v", V like "f", J like "yot", and Z is "tset" — these are the ones that surprise English speakers.

Official Times Use the 24-Hour Clock For appointments, timetables and opening hours, German uses the 24-hour clock: um vierzehn Uhr = 2 pm, um siebzehn Uhr dreißig = 5:30 pm. In everyday speech people still say um zwei Uhr or um halb sechs, and use morgens / nachmittags / abends (Chapter 1) to make the time clear. If you're not sure which is meant on the phone, repeat the time back: Also um vierzehn Uhr, richtig? ("So at 2 pm, right?")

Real German Tip — Say Your Name First Germans typically answer the phone with their surname, not just "Hello": Müller or Müller, guten Tag at home, and company name plus name at work: Firma Schmidt, Weber am Apparat. If someone answers with just their name, that is normal and not rude. When you call, say who you are straight away (Hier ist Smith) and use Sie unless you know the person well.
Real German Tip — Auf Wiederhören Auf Wiedersehen literally means "until we see each other again". On the phone you can't see the other person, so Auf Wiederhören ("until we hear each other again") is the traditional phone goodbye. You'll hear both, and people often simply say Tschüss or Bis dann to friends, so don't worry if you forget it. Mit wem spreche ich? ("Who am I speaking to?") is a polite way to ask who is calling.

✍️ Try It Yourself — Übungen

Say each answer out loud first, then click to check.

1. Answer the phone at work (formal). Your name is Keller.

Show answer

Keller, guten Tag. (or: Firma …, Keller am Apparat.)

2. Say who you are and ask to speak to Mr Braun.

Show answer

Guten Tag, hier ist Smith. Kann ich bitte Herrn Braun sprechen? (Herr becomes Herrn when it's the object.)

3. You can't hear well. Say so, and ask the caller to repeat and speak more slowly.

Show answer

Entschuldigung, ich verstehe Sie nicht gut. Können Sie das bitte wiederholen und langsamer sprechen?

4. Ask someone to call you back, and give your number: zero one seven one, two three four five.

Show answer

Rufen Sie mich bitte zurück. Meine Nummer ist null eins sieben eins, zwei drei vier fünf.

5. Suggest Tuesday at ten for an appointment. The other person can't — suggest Wednesday instead.

Show answer

Passt es Ihnen am Dienstag um zehn Uhr?  ·  Leider nicht. Geht es am Mittwoch?

6. Say you have to cancel your appointment.

Show answer

Ich muss meinen Termin leider absagen. (Muss in second place, absagen at the end; meinen because Termin is a der-word.)

Coming Up in Chapter 11 You can now cope with a phone call. Next: giving opinions and preferences — saying what you think, agreeing and disagreeing politely, and explaining why.
