Three verbs — drei Verben

Helfen changes its vowel with du and er (du hilfst). Verlieren is regular. Funktionieren ends in -ieren, so its participle has no ge- (funktioniert), as with studieren in Chapter 9.

⏪ Saying What Happened — The Perfekt in Action

Problems are almost always reported in the Perfekt from Chapter 9: helper verb second, participle last.

InfinitiveParticipleHelperExample
verlieren (to lose)verlorenhabenIch habe meinen Schlüssel verloren.
verpassen (to miss)verpassthabenIch habe den Bus verpasst.
vergessen (to forget)vergessenhabenIch habe meine Tasche vergessen.
stehlen (to steal)gestohlenhabenJemand hat mein Handy gestohlen.
passieren (to happen)passiertseinWas ist passiert?
ausfallen (to be cancelled)ausgefallenseinDer Zug ist ausgefallen.
Notice the Patterns from Chapter 9 Verlieren, verpassen, vergessen and passieren all follow the "no ge-" rule (verbs starting with ver- and verbs ending in -ieren). Ausfallen is separable, so the ge- goes in the middle: ausgefallen. And passieren and ausfallen take sein because something changes or happens. Remember that masculine words take meinen: meinen Zug, meinen Schlüssel.

🆘 Emergencies — Notfälle

In an emergency, short and clear is best: what has happened, where you are, then answer their questions.

Rufen Sie die Polizei!ROO-fen zee dee poh-lee-TSYCall the police!
Ich bin verletzt.ikh bin fer-LETSTI'm injured.
Ich bin hier: …ikh bin HEERI'm here: … (and give the place)
Emergency Numbers 112 is the European emergency number for ambulance and fire and works throughout the EU, including Germany and Austria; in Germany the police can also be reached on 110. In German you say the number as eins eins zwei (112) or eins eins null (110). If you travel in Austria or Switzerland, check the local numbers for the police and ambulance before you go, since they differ. Keep it calm and simple: say was ist passiert, wo, and your name.

Real German Tip — Asking for Help Politely Even when things go wrong, Entschuldigung and bitte are still the best start: Entschuldigung, können Sie mir helfen? Most people will help when asked politely. If you don't understand the answer, use the phrases from Chapter 10: Können Sie das bitte wiederholen? Langsamer, bitte.

What Comes Next The natural next step is the next Basic Conversation course, which would build on this one with new situations (for example travel, work, shopping for clothes, and public services) and begin to explain the grammar you've been using as ready-made chunks: the endings on adjectives, dem / der / vom after prepositions, and weil and dass with the verb at the end. Until then, keep practising out loud, re-read the vocabulary tables, and try describing your own day in German each evening — viel Erfolg! ("good luck!").
