Which Helper? Avoir Unless It's Movement Nearly every verb uses avoir. The ones with être are mostly verbs of going and coming (aller, venir, arriver, partir, rentrer, sortir, rester, descendre) and all reflexive verbs (je me suis levé). Learn them as a list; the rest are avoir.
Agreement Only Shows in Writing With être the participle agrees with the subject: elle est allée, ils sont partis, elles sont sorties. With avoir it does not (elle a mangé). In speech you usually can't hear the difference, so don't worry about it when you talk, but include the -e and -s when you write.
Real French Tip — One Past for Conversation In everyday speech the passé composé does almost all the work: it means "I ate", "I have eaten" and "I did eat". Il y a + a time means "ago": il y a deux jours ("two days ago"). Don't confuse it with dans, which looks forward (Chapter 3: dans dix minutes).
