Phone & Appointments

French Basic Conversation 2

Chapter 10 · Phone Calls & Making Appointments

📞 Phone Calls & Making Appointments — Au téléphone et les rendez-vous

Answer the phone, ask for someone, leave a message, book or change an appointment, and spell your name. On the phone you introduce yourself with C'est … à l'appareil ("It's … speaking"), never Je suis. Phone numbers are said in pairs, so the numbers from Chapter 3 of French Basic Conversation 1 come back, and the 24-hour clock from Chapter 7 gives the time of an appointment. Use vous with businesses and tu with friends.

"C'est", Never "Je suis" On the phone you say who you are with C'est Paul or C'est Paul à l'appareil; Je suis Paul sounds odd. The caller usually says who they are before asking for anyone, and a business answers with its name: Cabinet du docteur Leroy, bonjour.
Asking Someone to Spell Say Comment ça s'écrit ? ("How is that written?") or Pouvez-vous épeler ?. To spell an email address aloud: paul point martin arobase gmail point com. For a double letter say deux + the letter, as in deux T ("TT").
Real French Tip — Two Digits at a Time A phone number is said as five pairs, and numbers over seventy follow the pattern you met in Chapter 3 of French Basic Conversation 1: 78 is soixante-dix-huit ("sixty-eighteen"). If you can't catch a number, ask Pouvez-vous répéter, s'il vous plaît ? or write it down as the other person speaks.
