Chapter 7 · Eating Out: Restaurants, Dietary Needs & Complaints

"Le Menu" Is Not the Menu In France la carte is the list of all the dishes (what English calls "the menu"), while le menu is a fixed-price meal of two or three courses, usually cheaper than ordering separately. If you want to see what is available, ask for la carte. Service is normally included in the price, so leaving extra is optional.
The Pronoun Matches the Noun Le / la / les agree with the thing replaced, not with who is eating: la soupe → je la prends, le poulet → je le prends, les frites → je les prends. Before a vowel or a silent h, le and la both become l': Je l'adore. With two verbs, put the pronoun before the second: Je vais le prendre.
Real French Tip — Make an Allergy Clear Say it early and clearly: Je suis allergique aux noix, then ask Il y a des noix dedans ? for each dish, rather than guessing. For a serious allergy add C'est grave ("it's serious"). Staff in French restaurants are used to the question.
