Il Is Just a Placeholder Weather sentences always use il, and it means nothing: it is just a placeholder, as "it" is in "it's raining". Il pleut and Il neige are single verbs (no fait): Il fait pleut is wrong. For a negative: Il ne pleut pas.
"J'ai chaud" — You Are Hot, Weather Is Hot For the weather use il fait chaud / froid. For how you feel, use avoir: J'ai chaud, J'ai froid ("I'm hot / cold"). Never Je suis chaud, which has a quite different meaning.
Real French Tip — Weather Idioms French small talk has colourful expressions. Il fait un temps de chien means "the weather is awful" (literally "a dog's weather"). Il pleut des cordes means "it's pouring" (literally "it's raining ropes"). Note too that le temps means both "weather" and "time": Quel temps fait-il ? is about weather; Tu as le temps ? is "Do you have time?".
