Home & Neighbourhood

French Basic Conversation 2

Chapter 5 · Your Home & Neighbourhood

🏠 Your Home & Neighbourhood — Votre maison et votre quartier

Describe where you live, say where things are, and talk about renting. The key grammar is il y a ("there is / there are"), the prepositions of place (sur, sous, devant, derrière, à côté de, entre) and the little pronoun y (J'y habite, "I live there"). Chapter 10 of French Basic Conversation 1 introduced devant and other position words for directions; here they describe a home. 📐 Where Is It? — Les prépositions de lieu

A preposition of place tells you where something is. Several end in de, which joins with the article: de + le = du, de + les = des; de la and de l' do not change.

FrenchSay itEnglishExample

➡️ The Little Word Y — Le pronom y

Y replaces a place that has already been mentioned: Tu habites à Paris ? — Oui, j'y habite ("I live there"). It goes before the verb, and je becomes j'. In this course it is used only for places.

FrenchSay itEnglishExample
j'y habitezhee ah-BEETI live thereTu habites à Lyon ? — Oui, j'y habite.

After a Negative, "Pas de" Il y a un jardin becomes Il n'y a pas de jardin. The article (un, une, des) drops out and de takes its place: Il n'y a pas de garage, pas de balcon, pas d'ascenseur (before a vowel: d').
Counting Floors and Rooms In France the ground floor is le rez-de-chaussée, and le premier étage is the first floor above it, as in Britain. Flats are described by the number of pièces, and the kitchen and bathroom are usually not counted: un trois-pièces is typically a living room and two bedrooms, plus a kitchen and bathroom.
Y Goes Before the Verb English puts "there" after the verb ("I go there"); French puts y before it: J'y vais. In a negative, ne goes before y: Je n'y vais pas. Y replaces a place that was already named, so use it when the place is clear from the conversation.
