Plans & Invitations

French Basic Conversation 2

Chapter 3 · Making Plans & Invitations

📅 Making Plans & Invitations — Faire des projets

Make plans, invite someone, and say yes or no politely. The key new grammar is the near future: aller + an infinitive (Je vais cuisiner, "I'm going to cook"), which is how French speakers talk about almost everything that is going to happen. You will also meet pouvoir (can) and devoir (must), and the everyday word on for "we".

① Weekend Plans — Samedi

A: Qu'est-ce que tu fais samedi ? kes-kuh tü FEH sam-DEE What are you doing on Saturday?

④ A Formal Invitation — Une invitation polie

A: Madame Roche, est-ce que vous voulez venir dîner chez nous vendredi ? mah-DAHM ROSH, es-kuh voo voo-LAY vuh-NEER dee-NAY shay NOO vã-druh-DEE Madame Roche, would you like to come to dinner at our place on Friday?

B: Parfait. À vendredi alors ! par-FEH. ah vã-druh-DEE ah-LOR Perfect. See you on Friday, then!

🔜 The Near Future — Le futur proche

To say what is going to happen, use aller (conjugated) + an infinitive: Je vais cuisiner ("I'm going to cook"). This is the normal way to talk about the future in everyday French, for both near and distant events. The negative goes around aller: Je ne vais pas sortir. Time words make it clear when.

🙌 Can, Want, Must — Pouvoir, vouloir, devoir

These three verbs are followed by an infinitive too, and they are the core of invitations: Tu veux venir ? (want), Je ne peux pas (can't), Je dois travailler (must). Vouloir is in Chapter 8 of French Basic Conversation 1; the other two follow the same irregular pattern.

🎉 Inviting, Accepting, Refusing — Inviter, accepter, refuser

Keep a refusal short and kind: say sorry, give a reason if you want to, and suggest another time.

"On" Means "We" In everyday speech on replaces nous: On va au cinéma ? = "Shall we go to the cinema?" It takes the same verb ending as il (on va, on peut, on fait). On y va ? ("Shall we go?" literally "we go there?") is a very common phrase for setting off. Use nous in careful writing and formal speech.

🔧 Three Verbs You Just Used — Trois verbes

Aller (to go, from Chapter 7 of French Basic Conversation 1) builds the future; pouvoir and devoir are the two new irregular verbs.

The Near Future — Just "Aller" + Verb Nothing else changes: only aller is conjugated, and the second verb stays in the infinitive. Nous allons manger ("we're going to eat"), ils vont partir ("they're going to leave"). Unlike English, it's also used for plans that are certain: Demain, je vais travailler is simply "Tomorrow I'm working." You don't need to learn the full future tense yet.
Refusing Politely Doesn't Need a Reason Désolé(e), je ne peux pas is a complete, polite refusal. You can add a reason (je dois travailler, je suis pris(e), "I'm tied up"), but you don't have to, and giving a long excuse can sound unnatural. Follow it with Peut-être une autre fois ? to keep the friendship warm.
Real French Tip — "Dans" for Time Ahead Dans + a length of time means "in" (from now): dans dix minutes, dans une heure, dans deux jours. It's different from pendant ("during", "for") and en ("it takes"): Le train arrive dans dix minutes ("in ten minutes' time").
