Chapter 6 · At Work: Meetings, Emails & Colleagues

🖥️ At Work — Munkahelyen

Office life has its own language: meetings, agendas, deadlines, emails, and the constant question of what you must, may or mustn't do. This chapter introduces kell, lehet and szabad with the personal infinitive (mennem kell), one of the most distinctive features of Hungarian. Dialogs have no respelling line; the Hard words notes cover the difficult words.

📌 Must, May and Mustn't — Kell, lehet, szabad

Three little words carry most of the "must" and "may" of office life. Kell ("must, have to") and lehet ("it is possible") are followed by an infinitive, and szabad means "it is allowed". To say who must do it, the infinitive takes a personal ending: Mennem kell ("I have to go"), Mennie kell ("She has to go").

WordMeaningExampleEnglish
kellmust; need toMennem kell.I have to go.
nem kellneedn'tNem kell sietned. You don't have to hurry.
lehetit's possible; mayLehet kérdezni?May one ask?
szabadit's allowedSzabad itt parkolni? Is it allowed to park here?
nem szabadmustn'tItt nem szabad dohányozni. You mustn't smoke here.

nekik (they)-niuk / -niükmenniükdolgozniukMEHN-nih-uek / DOL-goz-nih-uk
Nem kell vs Nem szabad These two differ sharply from English "mustn't". Nem kell means you don't have to (it is not necessary): Nem kell sietned ("You needn't hurry"). Nem szabad means it is forbidden: Itt nem szabad dohányozni ("Smoking is not allowed here").

🧳 Word Order with Prefixes — Igekötő

With kell, a separable prefix goes in front: el kell mennem ("I have to go away"), be kell fejeznem ("I have to finish"), meg kell beszélnünk ("we have to discuss"). Without a prefix the order is free: Mennem kell. You can add the person with the dative for emphasis: Nekem el kell mennem ("I, for my part, have to go").

📧 Emails — E-mailek

Formal Hungarian emails open with Tisztelt …! and close with Üdvözlettel. With colleagues you know, use Kedves …! or Szia …! and close with Üdv.

Hétfő reggel Tóth Zsuzsa megnézte az e-mailjeit. A főnöke, Kiss Gábor, értekezletet hívott össze tízre. A napirenden három pont volt: az új ügyfél, a határidők és a nyári szabadságok.

Az értekezleten Gábor elmondta, hogy a jelentést péntekig kell elkészíteni. Zsuzsának még át kellett néznie a számokat, ezért délután bent maradt. Este hétkor elküldte a jelentést, és megkérte Gábort, hogy válaszoljon még aznap.

Real Hungarian Tip — Who Is the Infinitive About? The personal ending on the infinitive tells you who must do something, so you often do not need the subject pronoun: Mennem kell already means "I have to go". If the subject is general ("one must"), use the plain infinitive: Be kell zárni az ajtót ("The door has to be closed").
Üdv, Üdvözlettel, Tisztelettel Üdvözlettel ("with greetings") is the standard email ending. Tisztelettel ("with respect") is more formal, and Üdv ("greetings") is a casual shortened form. Köszönettel ("with thanks") suits a request. Never use Szia as a closing in a formal email.
Kérdezhetek, Szabad? — Polite Interruptions To interrupt politely, say Elnézést, kérdezhetek valamit? or Bocsánat, közbeszólhatok? ("Sorry, may I interject?"). And knocking on a door, the Hungarian word to ask permission to enter is simply Szabad?
