Living Abroad: Settling In & Making Friends

Hungarian Basic Conversation 3

Chapter 12 · Living Abroad: Settling In & Making Friends

🏡 Living Abroad: Settling In & Making Friends — Új otthon, új barátok

The last chapter is about making a new place feel like home: meeting your neighbours, inviting friends, joining a club and talking about missing the people you left behind. You will learn -hoz / -hez / -höz ("to a person"), the special forms hozzám, hozzád, hozzánk, and the odd-looking hiányzik. It finishes with a Course Complete recap. ➡️ Going to a Person — -hoz / -hez / -höz

To say to a person (or to a place where you go for a person, like the doctor), Hungarian adds -hoz, -hez or -höz to the noun. The vowel harmony you know decides which: a baráthoz, a szomszédhez, a főnökhöz. Use it for people (Megyek az orvoshoz), and -ba/-be for buildings you enter (a boltba).

🙋 To Me, To You, To Us — hozzám, hozzád …

With pronouns, -hoz turns into a special set of forms. Learn them as one block, because you will use them for every invitation: Gyere hozzánk! ("Come to us!"), Átjössz hozzám? ("Will you come over to me?").

🤝 Three Verbs for Settling In — Igék

All three are -ik verbs, so the I form ends in -om/-em/-öm. Notice how hiányzik works: Hiányzol nekem means "I miss you" (literally "you are missing to me"). The person you miss is the subject.

Anna Skóciából költözött Budapestre. Az első hónapban nagyon magányos volt, és sokszor volt honvágya. Aztán találkozott a szomszédjával, Máriával, aki meghívta kávéra. Mária elvitte egy nyelvi klubba, ahol Anna új barátokat talált.

Most hetente kétszer találkozik a barátaival, és szombatonként ő hívja meg őket vacsorára. Ha egy új ember költözik a házba, ő is bemutatkozik, és üdvözli. Anna azt mondja: „Már otthon érzem magam.”

Real Hungarian Tip — Going to a Person Means -hoz In English you go "to the doctor" and "to the shop" in the same way. In Hungarian the two are different: az orvoshoz megyek (to a person) but a boltba megyek (into a place). Use -hoz/-hez/-höz whenever a person is the goal of the journey, and hozzám, hozzád, hozzánk for visits to somebody's home.
Offering the Informal You — Tegeződés Hungarians change from Ön to te only when both agree. Usually the older person, or the person in the higher position, makes the offer, but between neighbours of similar age Tegeződhetünk? is perfectly polite. Once you have agreed, stay with te; going back is awkward.
Hiányzik — Who Misses Whom? Hiányzol nekem ("I miss you") uses the person missed as the subject, and nekem marks the person who misses. So Hiányzik a család is "The family is missing (to me)". With a plural subject use hiányoznak: Hiányoznak a barátaim.
