Chapter 9 · Shopping & Prices

🛍️ Shopping & Prices — Vásárlás

💰 Forint and Big Numbers — Forint és nagy számok

The Hungarian currency is the forint (FO-rint, written Ft). Prices are often in hundreds and thousands, so learn száz, ezer and the way they combine. After a number the word forint stays singular: ötszáz forint.

NumberHungarianSay itNotes
100százSAHZ
200kétszázKAYT-sahzkét + száz
300háromszázHAH-rom-sahz
400négyszázNAYDY-sahz
500ötszázEUT-sahz
1,000ezerEH-zehr
1,500ezerötszázEH-zehr-EUT-sahzthousands first, then hundreds, written as one word
2,000kétezerKAYT-eh-zehr
5,000ötezerEUT-eh-zehr
10,000tízezerTEEZ-eh-zehr
20,000húszezerHOOS-eh-zehr
Reading a Price Say the thousands, then the hundreds, then the tens, in one go: 1 500 Ft is ezerötszáz forint (EH-zehr-EUT-sahz FO-rint), and 12 000 Ft is tizenkétezer forint. For more complicated amounts, ask Még egyszer, kérem! or look at the till display.

👆 This and That — Ez és az

ez is "this" and az is "that". When they are the object of a verb they take the object ending -t: ezt and azt. So Ezt kérem means "I'll take this one".

⚖️ Cheap, Expensive and Comparisons — Drága, olcsó

Comparing is easy in Hungarian: add -bb to the adjective: olcsó → olcsóbb ("cheaper"), nagy → nagyobb ("bigger"). A few adjectives lengthen or add a linking vowel first.

Real Hungarian Tip — Coins and Notes Hungarian money has coins of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200 forints and notes of 500, 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 forints. Prices are big numbers because the forint is a low-value currency, so a coffee or a snack can easily be in the hundreds. Cash totals are rounded to the nearest 5 forints.
Nyitva and Zárva You met nyitva (open) and zárva (closed) on shop doors in the alphabet course. Combined with times they tell you when a shop opens: look for Nyitva: hétfő–péntek 9–18. A market (piac) is the place where you might even try a little bargaining.
Ezt Kérem — the Definite Form Ezt kérem uses kérem, not kérek. Hungarian verbs have two sets of endings: one when the object is something specific (this one, that one, the bill) and one when it is general (a coffee). So: Egy kávét kérek (a coffee) but Ezt kérem (this one). Learn both as set phrases for now: the full system comes in a later course.
Csak Nézek — the Shopper's Shield Csak nézek ("I'm just looking") is the polite way to tell a shop assistant you don't need help yet. They will usually smile and leave you to it, so it's a very handy phrase when you're browsing.
