This chapter is split into three parts: Part 1, the numbers 0 to 10; Part 2, counting to 100; and Part 3, saying your age, your phone number and your email address. ① Part 1 — The Numbers 0 to 10 — Számok

Hungarian numbers are very regular once you know the first ten. Say them out loud: with first-syllable stress and the long vowels you learned in the alphabet course, they are easy to say.

② Part 2 — Counting to 100 — Tizenegytől százig

The teens are tizen- plus the ones: tizenegy is "ten-one". The twenties use huszon-. From 30 up you simply say the tens, then the ones.

③ Part 3 — Age, Phone Numbers and Contact Details — Életkor és elérhetőség

Real Hungarian Tip — Phone Numbers Say a phone number one digit at a time: it is always understood. Hungarian mobile numbers begin with 06 inside Hungary, followed by a two-digit network code (such as 20, 30 or 70) and seven digits. From abroad, you dial +36 instead of the 06. If you struggle, ask Még egyszer, kérem! or Lassabban, kérem!
Hány éves? — Asking About Age Asking an adult's age directly is less common in Hungary than in some countries, so use it with friends and in learning situations rather than with strangers. To practise safely, say your own age: Harmincöt éves vagyok.
Hét Means Seven and a Week Hét means both seven and week,. You will meet the word again with days and dates in Chapter 7. Context tells you which: hét nap is "seven days", and egy hét is "a week".
A Handy Lifesaver: Értem and Nem értem Értem ("I understand") and Nem értem ("I don't understand") are two of the most useful phrases in any language. Combine them with Még egyszer, kérem! and you can handle almost any conversation about numbers.
