🌍 Where You're From — Woher kommst du?
Say where you come from and where you live, name your country, nationality and languages, and ask others the same. It's one of the first things people ask each other, so you'll use these phrases constantly.

Three verbs — drei Verben
Notice the pattern: ich ends in -e, du in -st, Sie in -en. (Sprechen is slightly irregular for du: du sprichst.)

Countries With "the" — die Schweiz & die USA
A few countries include the article die (and after aus or in it changes): ich komme aus der Schweiz, ich wohne in der Schweiz; ich komme aus den USA, ich wohne in den USA. Just learn these two as fixed phrases for now — everywhere else you use the country name alone.

German has a separate word for a man and a woman. Say ich bin … and pick the one that fits you. Notice that a woman's form usually adds -in.

Languages — Sprachen
Language names are simply the adjective, written with a capital letter: Deutsch (doych), Englisch (ENG-lish), Französisch (frahn-TSUR-zish), Ungarisch (OON-gah-rish), Japanisch (yah-PAH-nish), Spanisch (SHPAH-nish), Italienisch (ee-tahl-YAY-nish). You say Ich spreche Englisch with no article. The same word is also used for nationality in the adjective form, but you don't need that yet.

Real German Tip — German Names for Cities
Many places have a different name in German than in English. Vienna is Wien (veen), Munich is München (MÜN-khen), Cologne is Köln (kurln), Zurich is Zürich, and Edinburgh is simply Edinburgh. Learn the German names of places you plan to visit — you'll see them on signs, tickets and maps, long before you'd meet the English versions.
Quick Grammar Note — "…, oder?"
Adding oder? ("or?") to the end of a statement turns it into a "…, isn't it?" question: Das ist in Schottland, oder? ("That's in Scotland, isn't it?"). It's one of the most useful little words in everyday German.
