Chapter 12 · Getting Around: Trains, Buses & Tickets

🚆 Getting Around — Unterwegs

Buy a ticket, find out when the next train leaves and from which platform, ask whether you have to change, understand a delay announcement, take a bus or a taxi, and check a seat is free. It's the last chapter of the course, so at the end you'll find a review of everything you can now do.

Three verbs — drei Verben

Fahren ("to travel / go by vehicle") changes its vowel in the du and er forms. Müssen ("must / have to") and können ("can / be able to") are irregular in the singular.

Muss, kann, möchte — The Second Verb Goes to the End You've now met three of these helper verbs: möchte (Chapter 8), kann (Chapters 8 and 10) and muss. They all work the same way: the helper verb comes second in the sentence, and the action verb goes to the end as an infinitive. Ich muss umsteigen. ("I have to change.") Wo kann ich eine Fahrkarte kaufen? ("Where can I buy a ticket?") Ich möchte nach Berlin fahren. ("I'd like to go to Berlin.") Once you notice the pattern you can build hundreds of new sentences.

Real German Tip — Delays and Connections German trains are a good way to travel, but delays (Verspätungen) are common enough that Germans joke about them. Check the departure board and platform before you go — a last-minute platform change (Gleiswechsel) is announced on the speakers — and leave a generous buffer when you have to change trains. Timetables use the 24-hour clock (Chapter 7): zehn Uhr fünfzehn, not Viertel nach zehn. Seat reservations (Sitzplatzreservierung) are optional but wise on long or busy journeys.
Real German Tip — Tickets and Inspectors Some buses, trams and underground systems in Germany require you to validate a paper ticket at a machine (entwerten or stempeln) before you board; on long-distance trains your ticket is checked by an inspector on board. Travelling without a valid ticket (Schwarzfahren) brings an on-the-spot fine, and inspectors are often in plain clothes. There is also a monthly subscription called the Deutschlandticket, valid on local and regional transport across the country (not on long-distance express trains) — ask at any ticket office.
