Making Plans & Invitations

German Basic Conversation 2

Chapter 3 · Making Plans & Invitations

📅 Making Plans & Invitations — Pläne und Einladungen

Suggest something to do, say yes or no politely, and agree on when and where to meet. This chapter also introduces three very useful little verbs — können, wollen and müssen — that change how every sentence is built.

💬 Six Short Conversations — Gespräche

Three little verbs — drei kleine Verben

Können (can), wollen (want to) and müssen (have to) are "modal" verbs. Their ich and er / sie forms are the same, and they have no ending in those forms: ich kann, er kann.

Modal Verb Word Order — Second Place and the End With a modal verb, the modal takes the second position and the second verb stays in its basic form (the infinitive) at the end: Ich muss heute arbeiten (I have to work today); Ich kann am Samstag nicht kommen (I can't come on Saturday). Note that nicht goes just before that final infinitive. You already saw this pattern in Chapter 2 with Ich gehe gern wandern.
"Wollen wir…?" Means "Shall we…?" Wollen wir with an infinitive at the end is the everyday way to suggest something: Wollen wir essen gehen? (Shall we go and eat?) Wollen wir uns am Samstag treffen? (Shall we meet on Saturday?) It is friendly and informal — a bit like "How about…?" — and you will hear it constantly. A slightly more polite way to say what you'd like is ich möchte ("I would like"), as in dialog 6: Ich möchte Sie einladen.

🙅 Reasons — Gründe

A polite "no" usually comes with a short reason. Each of these follows Ich muss… or Ich habe….

Ich muss arbeiten.ikh moos AR-by-tenI have to work.
Ich muss lernen.ikh moos LAIR-nenI have to study.
Ich muss zum Arzt gehen.ikh moos tsoom ARTST GAY-enI have to go to the doctor.
Ich habe schon etwas vor.ikh HAH-buh shohn ET-vahs FORI already have plans.

📍 When and Where — Wann und wo?

GermanSay itEnglish

nächste WocheNEKH-stuh VOKH-uhnext week

Don't confuse morgen (tomorrow) with morgens (in the mornings, Chapter 1). Learn vor dem, am and im as ready-made chunks for now — the grammar behind them comes later.

Real German Tip — "Ich lade dich ein" Einladen does not only mean "to invite": in everyday speech Ich lade dich ein often means "It's my treat — I'm paying". If you want to be clear that you're inviting someone to a café or meal and paying, say Ich lade dich ein. If you just want to suggest going together and each paying for themselves, Wollen wir essen gehen? is safer.
Real German Tip — A Plain "No" Is Fine German communication is often quite direct, and a simple Leider nicht ("Unfortunately not") with a short reason is considered perfectly polite — you don't need a long apology or an elaborate excuse. Adding leider or schade is what keeps it friendly. Suggesting another time (Vielleicht morgen?) shows you'd still like to meet.
