Two Little Words: "Pour" and "Du … au …" Pour ("for") introduces the people or the length of stay: pour deux personnes, pour trois nuits. To give the dates, use du … au … ("from … to …") with the numbers and months from Chapter 7: du douze au quinze octobre. Note that nuit and nuits sound identical ("NWEE"), so the number before it tells you whether it is singular or plural.

🔧 Three Verbs You Just Used — Trois verbes

Réserver ("to book") and rester ("to stay") are regular -er verbs. Partir ("to leave") is an irregular -ir verb: in the singular it loses its last consonant before the ending (je pars, il part), and the plural stays whole.

ils / ellesils réserventeel ray-ZAIRVils restenteel RESTils partenteel PART
"Il n'y a pas de…" and "…ne marche pas" Two phrases make complaints easy. Il n'y a pas de + noun ("there is no…") uses de after the negative, as in Chapter 5: Il n'y a pas de serviettes, il n'y a pas d'eau chaude. And …ne marche pas ("doesn't work") goes after the thing: La douche ne marche pas, le wifi ne marche pas. Starting with Excusez-moi, il y a un problème and ending with Merci keeps you polite, and staff nearly always respond helpfully.

Real French Tip — Floors, Tourist Tax and Breakfast French floors count like British ones: le rez-de-chaussée is the ground floor and le premier étage is the first floor up. Hotels in France often add a small taxe de séjour (tourist tax) per person per night, which may be listed separately from the room price. And a French hotel breakfast is usually bread or croissants, butter and jam, coffee and juice rather than a cooked meal, which is why it is often priced separately, so Le petit déjeuner est compris ? is worth asking. For the bill, hotels say la note (or la facture), reserving l'addition for restaurants.
