"De" + le / les = du / des The little word de after à côté, en face, près, loin joins with the article, just as in Chapter 4: de + le = du (à côté du musée), de + les = des (près des toilettes), but de la and de l' stay as they are (à côté de la poste, en face de l'hôtel). The same squashing happens with à: au (au coin), aux, while à la and à l' stay apart.

🔧 Giving Directions — L'impératif

Directions are commands, called the imperative. It's easy: take the tu or vous form of the present tense and drop the pronoun. For -er verbs the tu command also drops its final -s. With strangers you use vous: Tournez à gauche. With a friend: Tourne à gauche.

Verbtu (friend)Say itvous (polite)Say it
tourner (to turn)tourneTOORNtourneztoor-NAY
continuer (to continue)continuekõ-tee-NÜcontinuezkõ-tee-nü-AY
traverser (to cross)traversetrah-VAIRStraverseztrah-vair-SAY
prendre (to take)prendsPRÃprenezpruh-NAY
aller (to go)vaVAHallezah-LAY
Commands, Politeness and the Present Tense A bare command sounds abrupt in English, but in French giving directions with vous commands is normal and polite, especially with s'il vous plaît on the end. Friends often skip the command altogether and use the plain present with tu, as in dialog ③: Tu continues tout droit et tu tournes à gauche. This chapter uses commands rather than a full verb table, because that's the form you'll actually hear. Tourner, continuer and traverser follow the regular -er pattern from Chapter 4, and you already know aller and prendre.
First, Second, Third — Ordinals The ordinals you need are première (1st, f.), deuxième (2nd) and troisième (3rd). After the first, add -ième to the number: quatrième, cinquième, sixième. So: la première rue à gauche, la deuxième à droite. (A road is feminine; for a masculine noun the first is premier, as in le premier mai in Chapter 7.)

Real French Tip — Pardon, Excusez-Moi, and "Je Ne Suis Pas d'Ici" Begin by catching someone's attention with Excusez-moi, Monsieur / Madame (or a quicker Pardon), then ask your question and finish with merci. If you hear Je ne suis pas d'ici ("I'm not from here"), you've asked another visitor, which happens to every traveller and is the local's equivalent of a shrug. In a city, a note of the street name and number is as useful as a map: a French address is written 12, rue Victor Hugo, with the number first. And if you find you can't follow the reply at all, Vous pouvez me montrer sur le plan ? ("Can you show me on the map?") will rescue you.
