MUSIC

For many people, the extent of their knowledge of Hungarian music is that famous composer, Franz Liszt. His first name, at least, sounds more German than Hungarian and is perhaps a reflection of the fact that he was born in a Hungarian town in the Austro-Hungarian Empire that is now part of Austria. His Hungarian heritage is revealed in the typically Hungarian spelling of his surname (Liszt is pronounced in the same way as the English word list). His first name is Ferenc in Hungarian so his full name (following the Hungarian tradition of putting the family name first) is Liszt Ferenc.

There are plenty of clips of Liszt's music on YouTube but the following is a compilation of some of his best music.

Listening to modern Hungarian songs can be very helpful when learning the language. I think, personally, that the availability of such a wide range of music in English can be very helpful for non-English speakers learning the language and there is no other language that can say that to the extent that English can. Nevertheless, you can probably find some music with lyrics for any language and Hungarian is no exception. Listening to songs in Hungarian can improve your Language skills by giving you more exposure to the way the language sounds. A good example of this is Joszefvaros by Animal Cannibals which is a Hungarian rap song released in 1996. While filming "The Spy Who Dumped Me", Kate McKinnon learned the first verse of the song and subsequently performed it on Jimmy Fallon (unfortunately no longer available on YouTube). You can still find a clip from WCNC (I think that's the local news channel in Charlotte, North Carolina).

This only gives you a small snippet of the song but the original song by Animal Cannibals is available on YouTube.

Yózsefváros
Yo, yo, hogy itt vagyunk |
Most végre valamit bemutathatunk |

Hiszen királyok a yozsefvárosi gyerekek |

Ez egy veszélyes terület |
Gengszter kerület |
Ez egy veszélyes terület Gengszter kerület |
Ez egy veszélyes terület, egy gengszter kerület |
Itt halált osztanak a fegyverek |
A környéket rosszfiúk uralják egyedül |
Én itt születtem, mi itt nőttünk fel |
Hogy mások mit mondanak, nem érdekel |
Nyisd ki a szemed, vedd már észre |
Ez is csak egy kerület, Budapest része |

Yózsefváros
Yo, yo, we're here |
Now we can finally present something |
This is Yozsefváros, our homestead |
This is where our mother raised us |
Where there are a lot of stupid adults with us |
In vain, this place has grown to our hearts |
Your mother doesn't plant a palm tree here |
And the kids are just ruining the school |
Because you can't walk away from the many whispers |
What matters is what your hair and sweater look like |
You will either be a friend or an enemy |
Humanity no longer matters here |
Old, torn clothes |
A gubis hangs to the waist in the trash |
My question is just that, yo, enough |
This is all a street scene in Yossef |
Yo-Yo-Yozsefváros |
Yo-Yo-Yozsefváros |
Yo-Yo-Yozsefváros |
This place is dark, ha-ha-ha, light |
Yo-Yo-Yozsefváros |
Yo-Yo-Yozsefváros |
Yo-Yo-Yo |
Housing estate and garbage dumps |
Well someone tell me what the hell to do |
The streets are cold and the winds are icy |
The houses are ruined and the spaces are dirty |
There is a lot of theft, robbery and violence, after all |
They bind to you for no reason |
And if you dare to speak back, your soul is on it |
This is how the nervous chase begins |
Even so, I'm just saying |
That I don’t mind living here and not on Rose Hill |
Because I never get bored here |
The fact that I love the neighborhood is no accident |
Because this is where life takes place |
Others hate you, they love you |
One can always trust you |
After all, kings are the children of Yossef |

This is a dangerous area |

Gangster district |
This is a dangerous area in Gangster District |
This is a dangerous area, a gangster district |
Guns share death here |
But we still have to come to terms with the idea |
That crime is on the rise every day |
An explosion breaks the silence of the night |
Only the strong remain, the weak die |
Whoever gets in here runs away |
The area is ruled by bad guys alone |
I was born here, we grew up here |
I don't care what others say |
Open your eyes, notice |
It is also only a part of Budapest |
